Eureka Street
The plot of the novel takes place in Belfast, which is plagued by the war between Protestants and Republicans. The main character of the novel, which is "essentially about love", is Jake Jackson, a Belfast man in his late thirties, whose love life is one big failure. Since his greatest love, Sara, left him, he has been trying unsuccessfully to find a partner who, apart from the bed, would also share her whole life with him. Unfortunately, unfortunately, all the good girls are already taken, and since Jake doesn't necessarily know about it, he gets into all kinds of trouble. So you could call Mr. Jackson an example of a complete loser.
However, the book does not only present the profile of Jake, who has been wronged by his fate. The second important hero is Theodore Lurgan, nicknamed Teddy Bear due to his appeareance. Theodor, unlike Jake, decides to abandon the monotonous life at the brewery and takes advantage of the smile of fate, getting a wonderful girlfriend and, through a small scam, becomes a millionaire. In addition to Jake and Theodor, the book also presents such people as: Max - Theodores beloved, who completely changes his current life, Roche - a twelve-year-old from a pathological family, who gains Jake's sympathy, Aoirghe - Max's friend and at the same time Jackson's fiercest enemy, Peggy Lurgan - Theodores's mother. These characters are a kind of mixture of personalities that trigger various emotions in the main characters, thanks to which we get to know them better.
The whole background of the events is also interesting. The action takes place in Belfast, engulfed in fighting. In one of the chapters, Wilson describes the bomb explosion and its victims - who were just shopping and enjoying life. In addition to love, the book presents human life - fragile, uncertain, impermanent. The author also ridicules the fight of religious groups and undermines the stereotype of America as a country of peace and wealth.
If you are looking for interesting love stories, you will find them here. (the book opens with the sentence "All stories are basically about love.") If you are looking for a large dose of humor - reach for "The Street of Dreamers". If you want to get emotional, guess what you have to do? "Street of Dreamers" is a complete, fantastic novel, absolutely absorbing from the first to the last page.
