The Act categorizes AI systems based on risk and emphasizes the protection of citizens’ safety and fundamental rights. It aims to provide clear legal guidelines for businesses and foster innovation while ensuring compliance with ethical standards. This act is significant in creating a standardized approach to AI regulation within the European Union.

U.S. National AI Initiative

In the U.S., the National AI Initiative continues to emphasize promoting AI research and development and enhancing collaboration among federal agencies, the private sector, academia and international allies. 
The initiative focuses on preparing the workforce for an AI-driven economy and leading in the development of AI technical standards globally. It also stresses developing reliable, robust and trustworthy AI systems, underscoring the importance of AI in the nation’s strategic interests.

High-risk systems are subject to stringent assessments and fundamental rights impact assessments​​​​.

In the U.S., AI regulation focuses on safety and security, with an executive order from President Joe Biden in 2022 mandating safety test disclosures for AI systems that could impact national security or public welfare.
