What is law
Law is a system of rules designed to regulate behavior in both public and private society. People have been making laws for thousands of years. Early examples include Egyptian law, Babylonian law and Chinese law.
So why is law important?
Laws set standards of acceptable and unacceptable behavior. At its most basic, the law is about reducing conflict. Societies take into account what causes conflict when creating laws. Some things, such as extortion and theft, are obvious and have been covered in laws dating back to ancient times. However, as time passes and societies change, acceptable changes are also made. Legal systems adapt to provide clarity and context for unacceptable actions. They also provide guidelines for appropriate results.
Laws keep everyone safe. Laws not only respond to injustices and harms, they also work to prevent them.
