Oral hygiene is simply taking care of the mouth and its accessories. We need not be health professionals to adequately observe the oral oral etiquette. Daily oral hygiene enhances our oral health.

The mouth is called buccal cavity and consists of the vestibule and oral cavity proper. It is oval- shaped and has accessories which include lips, cheeks, teeth, gum, tongue, salivary glands, soft palate and mouth cavity

Functions of the mouth
A fully functional mouth should be able to speak(speech or communication), chew(mastication) and drink(Ingestion).

How to maintain oral hygiene.
You can take care of your mouth by a daily performance of the following:

  •  Clean your mouth, teeth and tongue every night before sleeping. This helps to prevent bacteria in your mouth from converting food residues to acids.
  • Rinse your mouth properly after brushing.
  • Know how to use your brush properly: brush vertically and not horizontally.
  • Floss your teeth
  • Exercise your mouth and teeth by chewing cotton or gauze. This helps to keep the muscles and teeth stronger
  • Avoid very hot and cold foods and drinks
  • Do not eat sweets and candies at bed time, if you do, brush your mouth properly.
  • Go for a routine dental check up.
  •  Report any abnormal bleeding, discharges, blisters and swelling on your tongue and inside the cheeks immediately to your dentist.

Is Halitosis connected to poor oral hygiene?
There are many forms of problems that people have relating to their mouth. One of these problem is halitosis. It means bad breath. Halitosis is noticed as bad smell by others who are at a close proximity to the sufferers. Just like body odour, it is both a health and social problem. If you have halitosis, kindly see a specialist and do not self-administer any form of remedy.

Dangers of poor oral hygiene.
Since the mouth has links with some other structures, when one or more of these structures are infected, bacteria can pass through blood to other important organs like the brain, heart, kidneys, liver, sexual organs, nose, throat and ears.
Primary infections of the mouth including gums, tongue, cheeks and teeth can result into secondary infections of the aforementioned organs. These include brain abscess. Infections pneumonia, endocarditis, stroke, dementia, premature birth, erectile dysfunction, low sperm count, cancer of the pancreas and diabetic complications.

The mouth is a vital part of us and should be properly taken care of. It is one of the organs that adds esthetic value(teeth and lips) to our existence just like the skin.
