NIGHT OF WITCH WARS
In his travelogue describing Azerbaijan and the Caucasus, Evliya Çelebi recounts an incident that occurred on the 20th night of Shawwal in the year 1076 (1665) in the village of Pedsi in the Hatukay Circassian region:
On a pitch-black night, lightning suddenly starts flashing like doomsday. The surroundings brighten enough for Circassian women to embroider. Amazed by the extraordinary situation, Evliya asks the nearby Circassians, who tell him, "Indeed, once a year there is such a night, the night of Karakoncolos. Circassian and Abkhaz witches soar into the sky and engage in a fierce battle." He is advised to go outside and watch fearlessly.
Accompanied by seventy or eighty people, Evliya goes outside. He witnesses Abkhaz witches riding on large trees, pots, boats, mats, wagon wheels, and various similar objects, while Circassian witches, carrying snakes, horse and camel heads, engage in a fierce battle. The battle lasts for a full 6 hours, filling the air with a deafening noise. Objects like felt, sticks, pots, boats, doors, and finally, limbs of horses, humans, and other animals rain down from the sky. Seven Abkhaz witches and seven Circassian witches fall tangled on the ground. The Circassian witches immediately kill two Abkhaz witches, suck their blood, and throw their corpses into the fire. The war ends with the crowing of roosters, and the witches disappear.
Evliya expresses skepticism about such stories but mentions that he and everyone else present were amazed by what they saw. He notes that the locals had not witnessed such an intense "night of Karakoncolos" in the last 40 to 50 years.
"...there are also witches in this region during Karakoncolos nights who appear and drink human blood. According to what the people told Evliya, on some nights, witches afflict a person, drink their blood, and make them ill.
If the victim has no family, they fall into bed and die. If they have family, the relatives search the cemetery with a "witch-finder" for the buried grave where the witch has taken the soil off. Once found, the grave is dug up, and if it is confirmed that the person's blood has been consumed, the witch's corpse, whose eyes have burst like bloodshot eyes, is identified.
In this state, the witch is immediately removed from the grave, and a long blackberry stake is driven into its abdomen. To prevent another witch's spirit from inhabiting the body, it is burned in the fire. By the command of Allah, the witch's magic is futile, and the person whose blood was consumed quickly recovers.
According to Evliya Çelebi's account of what he heard, there are also witches living in these lands who roam among the people incognito. But when their time comes, they go mad, suck a person's blood from behind their ear, and the person gradually becomes ill. The person's relatives immediately find a "witch master" and travel from village to village, town to town, searching for the witch, whose eyes have turned into blood vessels from drinking blood. They catch and chain the witch.
After being chained for three days and three nights, when the witch confesses to what they did and their witchcraft, they are immediately laid down, and a blackberry stake is driven into their abdomen. When the blood that was consumed is applied to the face and eyes of the victim, who has turned into a blood vessel, they immediately recover. The witch's corpse is also thrown into the fire. This witchcraft trouble is dangerous, spreading from the plague, and is quite common in the Moscow, Polish, Czech regions, and so on."
