6 months before the 2024 US presidential election, Donald Trump is in a better position to win the White House than at any point in his previous campaigns.

Former US President Donald Trump has just given an extensive interview to Time magazine. He said he realized a serious mistake during his first term: "I was too nice."

There are 6 months until the 2024 US presidential election and Donald Trump is in a good position. He leads President Joe Biden by small margins in most election polls, including in some of the 7 battleground states likely to decide the outcome.

Time did not ask Donald Trump about the election, or how he became the first former US president to face a criminal trial. Reporters want to know what Donald Trump would do if he wins a second term, want to hear his vision for America, in his own words.

To carry out the campaign to deport more than 11 million people from the country, Trump said, he would be willing to build migrant detention camps and deploy U.S. troops, both at the border and on the interior. He would let red states oversee women's pregnancies and prosecute those who violate abortion bans.

According to top advisers, Donald Trump will retain the funds that Congress has allocated. He would be willing to fire a U.S. judge who didn't carry out his order to prosecute someone. Donald Trump also said he was considering pardoning each of his supporters accused of attacking the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, more than 800 of whom pleaded guilty or were convicted by a grand jury.

Donald Trump has said he may not come to the aid of an ally in Europe or Asia under attack if he feels the country is not spending enough on its defense. He will deploy the National Guard to U.S. cities as needed, closing the White House's pandemic preparedness office
Donald Trump is still the same person, with old goals and grievances. But personally, he was more assertive and confident. If reelected, Trump would enter a second term with the support of a series of policy agencies with loyal staffs who have outlined blueprints for his agenda.

Donald Trump's close adviser Kellyanne Conway said: "I don't think there's a big mystery about his agenda. But I think people will be surprised at his quick action."

The courts, the Constitution and Congress will all have a say in whether Donald Trump's goals pass. Public opinion will also be a powerful litmus test, as Donald Trump may be forced to scale back some of his most draconian initiatives in his first term, including a policy of separating migrant families.

As the famous British novelist and reporter George Orwell wrote in 1945, the ability of governments to implement their plans "depends on the general mood of the country

Every election is considered a national turning point. This time that's true. For supporters, the prospect of Donald Trump 2.0 holds revolutionary promise. For much of the rest of the country and the world, that could be an alarming risk.
Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley said Donald Trump's second term could be "the end of democracy."
