1.They’re selfish
If your partner doesn’t seem to care about anyone but themselves, take a moment to assess your relationship. German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm proposed that selfish people, rather than having too much self-love, in fact have none at all. Their self-hatred is the reason they relentlessly take from others; they simply have nothing to give. If your partner displays selfish behaviour, deeper issues may need to be addressed before your relationship can go any further.
While it’s great to have things in common with your partner, if you find that they are suddenly adopting all of your interests, you could be heading for splitsville. As dating coach Erika Ettin tells Business Insider, "In any relationship… it's important to both bond with your partner but also maintain your own life. You don't want to become so dependent on someone else that you lose who you are, or that essence that makes you unique. When you're doing things on your own, you become a more interesting, well-rounded person, thereby a better partner to anyone."
While it’s natural to get swept up in feelings of lust at the beginning of a relationship, psychologists say that if those are the only feelings you have for your partner, chances are the relationship will fizzle out over time as you get to know who they really are.
If you want your relationship to last, you need to be able to express your authentic self. While it’s natural to hide parts of yourself in the beginning of a relationship, psychologist Dr. Liz Powell says that having a successful relationship in the long term requires complete authenticity.
Pay attention to how your partner treats those around you, especially people in the service industry, such as wait staff or cashiers. They’ll no doubt be sweet to you during the early days of your romance, but if they generally look down on others, chances are they’ll eventually behave that way with you too.
