Nike, the globally renowned athletic wear company, is synonymous with innovation, performance, and style. The brand’s “swoosh” logo and “Just Do It” slogan are recognized worldwide, symbolizing excellence in sports and beyond. But have you ever wondered how Nike got its name? The story behind the name is as dynamic and inspiring as the company itself.

The Birth of an Icon

Nike's journey began in 1964 when Bill Bowerman, a track and field coach at the University of Oregon, and his former student Phil Knight founded Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS). Initially, BRS operated as a distributor for the Japanese shoe brand Onitsuka Tiger (now known as ASICS), selling their running shoes in the United States. The partnership was successful, but Bowerman and Knight had bigger ambitions: they wanted to create their own line of footwear.
By 1971, the relationship with Onitsuka Tiger was coming to an end, and it was time for BRS to launch its own brand. This crucial juncture required a new name and identity.

The Naming Process

The task of naming the new brand fell to Jeff Johnson, BRS’s first employee and a marketing executive. Johnson had a background in classics and was inspired by the ancient world. He brainstormed several potential names but struggled to find one that resonated.
The breakthrough came in a dream. Johnson dreamed of the Greek goddess of victory, Nike (pronounced "nee-keh"), who was known for her speed, strength, and triumph in battle. The name “Nike” captured the essence of what Bowerman and Knight wanted their brand to embody: victory, excellence, and athletic prowess.
When Johnson suggested the name "Nike" to the team, there was initial hesitation. Phil Knight wasn’t entirely sold on the name but decided to go with it, largely due to time constraints. The company needed a name for its new line of shoes to meet production deadlines.

The Symbolic "Swoosh"

Alongside the new name, the company needed a logo. Knight approached Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at Portland State University, to create a logo for the new brand. Davidson presented several designs, and ultimately, Knight chose the now-famous “swoosh” symbol, which represents motion and speed.
The “swoosh” was initially met with mixed feelings by the team, but it quickly grew on them. Today, it stands as one of the most recognizable logos in the world, symbolizing the energy and spirit of athletic achievement.

Rise to Prominence

With its new name and logo, Nike introduced its first line of shoes in 1972. The brand quickly gained popularity, thanks in part to its innovative designs and effective marketing strategies. The “waffle” sole, invented by Bowerman, provided better traction and became a hit among runners.
Nike’s real breakthrough came in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the endorsement of prominent athletes. The signing of basketball superstar Michael Jordan in 1984 was a game-changer. The Air Jordan line of sneakers not only boosted Nike’s profile but also revolutionized sports marketing.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name “Nike” perfectly encapsulates the brand’s ethos. In Greek mythology, Nike was a winged goddess who personified victory. She was often depicted with wings, symbolizing her speed and power, attributes that are central to athletic performance. By adopting this name, the founders of Nike aligned their brand with the ideals of triumph and excellence.

Nike’s name is more than just a label; it’s a testament to the company’s vision and values. From its inception, the brand has been dedicated to empowering athletes and inspiring victory. The story of how Nike got its name is a reminder of the power of inspiration, creativity, and determination in building a legacy. Today, Nike continues to honor its namesake by pushing the boundaries of innovation and maintaining its status as a leader in the athletic wear industry.

Thank you!
