Afghanistan is a landlocked country located in South Asia, bordered by Pakistan to the east and south, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan to the north. The country has a rich history that dates back to ancient times, with evidence of human habitation in the region dating back to at least 50,000 years ago. The modern state of Afghanistan was founded in 1747 by Ahmad Shah Durrani, who established the Durrani Empire. Since then, the country has experienced numerous conflicts and struggles, including invasions by foreign powers, civil wars, and political instability. In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, leading to a long and bloody conflict that lasted for over a decade. The war resulted in the deaths of an estimated one million Afghans and the displacement of millions more. The Soviet Union eventually withdrew its forces in 1989, but the conflict continued, with different factions vying for power. In the late 1990s, the Taliban, a militant Islamist group, gained control of most of the country and established a harsh regime that enforced strict Islamic law. The Taliban was ousted from power in 2001 by a US-led coalition, following the September 11 attacks in the United States. The coalition's goal was to dismantle al-Qaeda, the terrorist organization responsible for the attacks, and to remove the Taliban from power. Since then, Afghanistan has experienced a period of relative stability and progress, with the establishment of a democratically-elected government and improvements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. However, the country continues to face numerous challenges, including corruption, poverty, and ongoing conflict. In recent years, the Taliban has regained strength and influence, and there have been increasing concerns about the security situation in the country. In 2021, the Taliban launched a major offensive, and by August, they had taken control of most of the country, culminating in the fall of the capital city, Kabul. The United States and other countries have been evacuating their citizens and Afghan allies, and there are fears about the future of the country under Taliban rule. Overall, Afghanistan has a complex and turbulent history, and the future of the country remains uncertain.
