The Oghuz Khan Epic
The Oghuz Khan Epic
One day, amidst the passing days, Ay Khan was seized by the pains of childbirth. After the pains subsided, a son was born. The child's face was the color of the sky, his mouth fiery red like flames, and his eyes were as bright as honey; his hair was black, his muscles strong and dark. He was more beautiful than the most enchanting fairies.
He suckled from his mother's breast only once, never again. He spoke; he demanded raw meat, wine, and honey. He started talking immediately. He grew in forty days. After forty days, he started walking and playing. His feet were as powerful as bull's feet, his chest sturdy like the moon's chest, his waist slender like a wolf's, and his shoulders shiny and flexible like a marten's. His body was hairy. He herded horses, rode them, and went on deer hunts.
Days and nights passed; the child grew into a young man. In those times, there was a vast forest in the region. The forest had numerous streams and rivers flowing through it, attracting countless wild animals and waiting for thousands of hunters. But there was also a fearsome dragon in this forest. This dragon devoured herds of horses and the people in the area. It was a huge, fierce monster. The people were terrified, bewildered, and helpless.
Oghuz Khan, however, had become a mighty warrior. He decided to kill the dragon. One day, he made up his mind and set out for the hunt, carrying his bow, arrows, sword, and shield. He captured a deer, tied it to a tree with a flexible willow stick, and left. The next day, at sunrise, he returned. He saw that the dragon had swallowed the deer as it was. This time, he caught a bear, tied it with a golden belt, and chased it away.
The sun set, night fell, and then the morning came again. When the dawn broke, Oghuz Khan arrived in the forest. He stood under a tree and waited for the monster. Soon, the dragon appeared. It attacked him with its head, but Oghuz Khan struck it with his spear and killed the beast. He then cut off its head with his sword. Carrying the dragon's head, he returned, and when he saw an eagle devouring the dragon's intestines, he drew his bow and arrow, shooting and killing the eagle. He also cut off its head. Reflecting on the scene, he said to himself, 'The dragon, both ate the deer and the bear, and it was stronger than both of them. But my spear killed the dragon because my spear was made of iron. The eagle, in turn, devoured the dragon; my bow and arrow killed the eagle.'
Afterward, months and days passed. Oghuz Khan went to the forest again and began praying to God. Suddenly, a dark cloud descended from the sky. A blue light descended from the cloud, brighter than the sun and the moon. Oghuz Khan stood under the tree, and in the midst of the blue light, he saw a young girl sitting alone. She was incredibly beautiful. On her head, a star shone brightly like the North Star. The girl, so beautiful, made the sky laugh when she smiled and cry when she wept. Oghuz Khan, seeing the girl, lost his composure, fell in love, and took her with him.
Days and nights passed, and the very beautiful girl's eyes sparkled. She gave birth to three sons. One was named Gün (Sun), the second Ay (Moon), and the third Yıldız (Star). The children grew up, and one day, Oghuz Khan went to the forest again. In the middle of a lake on an island, he saw a girl sitting alone. She was not only beautiful but also wise. Her eyes were sky-blue, her hair flowed like river waves, and her teeth were like pearls.
The girl was so beautiful that it was impossible to describe. Anyone who saw her could faint or turn into milk. Oghuz Khan, upon seeing the girl, was captivated, fell in love, and took her with him. Afterward, the girl's eyes sparkled like tears. She gave birth to three sons: Gök (Sky), Dağ (Mountain), and Deniz (Sea). The children were born and started to grow.
On one of his journeys, Oghuz Khan encountered a wise old man named Ulug Türük. This wise man had a dream. In his dream, he saw a golden bow and three silver arrows. The golden bow stretched from sunrise to sunset, and the three silver arrows flew northward.
When Ulug Türük woke up, he told Oghuz Khan about the dream. Oghuz Khan appreciated the words of Ulug Türük, listened to his advice, and fulfilled the dream. The next day, he called his sons and commanded them:
"Gün, Ay, Yıldız! Travel towards the sunrise. Gök, Dağ, Deniz. You go towards the sunset."
Upon this order, the three sons traveled toward their assigned directions. Gün, Ay, and Yıldız had plentiful hunts and shot many birds, eventually finding a golden bow. They brought it back to Oghuz Khan, who rejoiced and divided it into three.
"Hey, my great sons! The bow is yours. Be like the bow and shoot your arrows to the sky," he said.
Gök, Dağ, and Deniz, on the other hand, had numerous hunts towards the west and found three silver arrows on their way back. They presented the arrows to Oghuz Khan, who once again rejoiced and divided them into three.
"Hey, my little sons! I give you the arrows. Be like the arrows," he said.
After these events, Oghuz Khan convened a grand assembly, inviting everyone. They gathered and waited.
Oghuz Khan had a tall tree planted on the right side of the grand tent, with a golden sheep tied to its top. On the left side, another tree was planted with a silver chicken on its top, tied to a black sheep at its bottom. The Bozoks sat on the right, and the Üçoks sat on the left. Forty days and nights passed in feasting, and when it was over, Oghuz Khan shared his land among his sons. Then he said:
"Hey, my sons, I have grown very old, witnessed many battles, shot many arrows with my bow, traveled many roads with my horse, made enemies weep, and friends laugh. I have repaid my debt to the Sky God, and now I have given you my land."
