Why Mindset plays a pivotal role in our life's Journey and Me as a Writer
Do understand that before the act of doing something, there has to be first an intention. And behind any intention, there is a or collective of thoughts. Those thoughts must be curated in your own will. Doing things in your life intentionally as possible, is something that my mentor used to say to me, is how you become good at what you do.
I must have heard and read countless of stories in my life time of people winning lottery tickets and are set for life. At the same time, these types of story really interest me. Not the gambling part, but more so the aftermath - what happened after they won the 1 in 1000000000000000 odd chances of getting a winning ticket. How hard it is to buy a lottery ticket and win? Apparently very hard, and most people used up all the luck they have in this lifetime to win.
Let me present you with a case study that relates to what I'm saying that I read awhile ago:
Sharon Tirabassi won more than 10 million Canadian dollar back in 2004 from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. That's a lot of money. Most people could only dream of having 1 million, let alone 10s of it. Less than a decade, she lost it all and in an interview with The Hamilton Spectator she said this after spending all of the money "All of that other stuff was fun in the beginning, now it's like, back to life". People were surprise that she went back to riding the bus, working part time and live in a rented house.
You may search the internet if you want to know more. How reckless one could be with their money? But that's not the point of presenting this case study to you.
My thoughts on it
Personally for me, I am not surprised that that happened to Sharon, in fact, I am not surprised if it happened to 99% of people. Preparation is the key here. Lottery will take you by surprise, and you have no time to prepare for it. If you do, then it is not gambling. Receiving something before preparing to receive it often brings misfortune. Of course in the case study it is lucky that she was a mother first, putting some investment into her children's trust fund and will be able to cash them out when they are 26. For most, it is easy to put this on the hindsight and ignore the fact that we are a creature of habit. And that alone makes the whole situation critical.
On top of that, there's also the random nature of how cruel life can be. So, yes, that makes preparation a highly sought skills these days. If you guessed BTC hits 71K few days ago, then congrats. But do you know when BTC will hit 100K or 20K in the future? No one knows for sure. You can only make a guess work. Nothing more. How you prepare for those outcome, will be the determining factor to your outcome. Hence, a highly sought skill - Preparation is not to be scuff at.
The Point
The point I'm trying to make is mindset and awareness plays a huge role and determines 90% of the outcomes in our lives. Preparation goes hand in hand with the twin (Mindset and awareness).
Mindset x Awareness x Action = Preparedness
The higher Mindset, awareness you have, the higher your preparedness will be. Nothing fancy.
While some may argue it is not important because if stupid people can make it, so can I! See, this is where everybody got it wrong. Mindset and awareness does not require high intelligence. There are smart people who acts irrationally and stupid. Lots of them. And there are illiterate people who made the right decisions most of the time. Funnily, lots of them. The good news is that anyone with brain could set their minds and be aware.
Personally for me, I have to understand it enough to take advantage of it. Leveraging thoughts and emotion towards your ambition can be a very powerful thing. Setting your mind and awareness will allow you to automate yourselves into doing things that will benefit you in the long run while ignoring the rest. Easy said than done, I know. And as far as I have observed, moment of weakness happens to the very best of us. Making me believe we may, just with enough amount of it, will propel you towards the goal you intent to achieve.
How all of this connected to getting out of the hell?
Read on.
For those who does not get what I mean by "The way out", you might need to read this one: Writing my way out of 9-5 Hell, before continuing on this one.
FYI to those whom are reading
The reason why I titled this article in such a way because its direct, and will cause less confusion to those whom click upon it. If you want to know the reason of why I am writing this article, read The Beginning.
First of all, as I have said in the past, this may not be the path for EVERYONE, but someone out there might find this useful and you may and may not take everything I said with a grain of salt. This article aims to be a blueprint to anyone who wants to get out of their 9-5 hell, as a resource of guide and motivation. If you find yourself reading this article and you disagree with it, that is on you. I am not enforcing this idea as the hail mary of "WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE". And like I said, take this with a grain of salt. This guide is made out of my own experience in life, and thus is valid for me. Hence I decide to choose this path, while sharing my journey and skills with the people who wants it.
And with that, we finally arrived at this second continuation to: Writing my way out of my own personal 9-5 HELL.
Ah, nothing beats that confidence in your gut telling you that you just made the right decision for your life isn't it. That fluttery butterfly-ish feelings in your guts is telling you that you are super hyped and excited by that feeling. You wished you could stay in that state forever, but sadly. Yes, sadly we are living in real world and not on some LALA wonderland.
The outlook started to become bleak as you thread in the path you choose, and somewhere somehow, you got lost. With the only thing that you can do is to fall back to where you were. Because that is what you know your whole life. The comfort zone.
For some, You quitted your job to join a partnership business with your friends, but the whole joint venture turns into constant argument and none of you could take it no longer and decide to call it quits.
For those who decide to do things on your own, you start to realized that it takes more than just "What you are good at" to make a successful business, because clearly you need to do "marketing and sales" to make sales and promotion. You need to know how to package your service to make it more attractive. You need to know to choose the location of your business. You need to know how to budget your money so that your business could run more than at least 6 months before you figure out how to make your first sales. You need to know how to even register your business!
There are so much to learn, and yet, what you want to know is just that "I'm super good at xyz" but at the same time wondering "why am I not successful??".
***Go back to (link to identifying skill article) to identify what you are good at, what you are bad at, and what skill you need. - THE BEGINNING
But as you go, you know for certain that you will be up against challenges. You must be! I have never met any start up who does not recognize their own skills and weaknesses. You either hire help to cover for that weakness, or spent resources to master it yourselves.
The alternatives
We could not continue on this journey without understanding your choice. For some there are none. (Yes there always is at the very least one extra option). For some there are multiple. Being aware of this could at least save you from yourselves.
You could stay at your job, and have a side income while at it. You could just stayed at your job and do nothing. You could quit your job and pursue your dream. You could do anything you want. It is always your choice. But, you have to be smart about whatever decision you arrived at. We are born with complex and articulate oriented brains, what's it for if not for thinking things through? I have seen too much regrets in life. Most of the regrets start with "I wish I had". Isn't it something we need to think about while we are living and breathing?
My personal THOUGHTS and the whole point of this part of the series
If you have not guess it yet, how all of this connected to your journey. Its this.
No matter how hard you do something, without placing a proverbial anchor inside your head - Mindset and Awareness. Nothing could ever prepare you for what to come next. The title of this part of the series tells you that there are some basic level way of thinking for this journey to increase by at least 1 % of success. I'll take even 0.1% to change the outcome to my favor.
If I were to just write, and write, and write, after setting a goal, and when it the route gets harder to navigate, I will end up giving up anyway. What's worst is that I might be trying to navigate the journey with the wrong tools altogether and not realizing it! And giving up is the easy way out! I wish I could punch the face of that thought.
The MINDSET as I push forward
To avoid myself from making more guesswork into my own work, I plan to keep some things in mind. Some of them are from experience, some are taught by the mentors I had all my life, and some are by observing the exceptional outliers.
- Consistency beats perfection.
- Positive attitude towards learning new things
- Keep it real - wishy washy thinking and fill yourselves with expectation is a one way ticket to disappointment avenue.
- You may not be successful from the get go as you build experience, knowledge, relationships in your business. The combinations of it will create a compounding effect in the end - making your success looks like an "OVERNIGHT SUCCESS".
- Keep your plans and strategies simple and direct - complexity is the enemy of progress
- Do what works, there are no need for me to reinvent the wheel. It will waste more time. And that is the most valuable resource that one could have.
And as the things that you might want to be AWARE of
I am going to lay out a few things that you need to be aware off if you plan to go out of the hell you're in.
Bear in mind that going out of the 9-5 hell, does not mean going out of the system. The two are the same, but different entirely in its end product. Because the first awareness is that you can't go out of the system in totality. The reason why is because you need money. And in order for you to get some money, you have to dabble with the system.
That means this: If you want money, you have to provide some sort of service to the public/people (entity). And that entity, is part of the system. To totally ignore this fact, and to not acknowledge this, is a first step to confusion of how can you go out of a system. Because in reality, you can't. Well, you can, technically, but not 100% of it.
The only way is if you leave everything behind and build a hut in the middle of the jungle. Who would want that.
First awareness: Money is the life blood of the system.
Second awareness: You need to know how to access and identify your skill sets, in all honesty. Focusing in what you good at, is a blessing, but more than that, it gives you the window to what you are not good at as well. Through that, is an opportunity to learn.
Third awareness: The road ahead will be tougher than that you see. More often much harder than you thought it would be. No gain without pain and shame. Be aware that you are required to learn new skills as you go along in the path that you choose. You will have to do what you do not like to do. The earlier you are aware of it, the better off you will be.
Fourth awareness: Time is not money, time is much more valuable than money. It will always be. The lies that the society imbedded us with do us more harm than good. Be mindful of how you spend your time when working on the things that contributes to your goal. Stop looking for purpose, its a waste of time. It will come with the flow of time as you aged and get wiser.
Fifth awareness: Be discouraged, because what you want to do is truly difficult. Just come back after for more after that. Failures are your best teacher.
Sixth awareness: Never ever get yourself stuck in the productivity hacks, the actual secret sauce to improving and success is to just do it. Learning without application, is just sad.
Seventh awareness: There will be people who will go against what you are doing, remember, don't argue with them. Don't hate them for it. They genuinely want the best for you. Appreciate them. But do understand that they are a part of the cog corporate machine system for the longest time. Through their lens of perspective, what you are doing, is the exact opposite of what is "good" for the cog corporate machine. Keep focusing on what you what to do for yourselves.
Eighth awareness: If you have a job, don't jump ship straight away. Remember, this is a journey, not a sprint. Its better to have something to fall onto if things does not go the way you planned.
There are many more awareness, but I think just like purpose, awareness changes over time. The ones that I mentioned in this write up are the ones that are less likely to change and stayed pretty much the same even in the next 10 years unless something major shifted in the world economy.
Closing thoughts
I know how cheeky and cringe it may sounds like, but I think this is the part where not much practical exercise can be done. But every turn in our life can be an opportunity to exercise the strength of your mind, and know when and how to throw the anchor that will keep you from straying away from your goals. Distractions are everywhere especially when it is as close to your hand.
Once you get this sorted out in your mind, I believe that you are ready for the next one. To use your skill sets to determine what you can do, to monetize it. For writing, my next step is to learn and re learn writing frameworks that could help me stay in focus of the journey.
Thanks for reading till the very end and I hope that this part of the series will somehow enlightened some of you in your journey same as it did for myself.
I will be seeing you in the next one.
