Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe, one of the legendary zeybeks of the Aegean Region, was born in 1872 in the Birgi township of İzmir's Ödemiş district. Efe, who attracted attention with his interest in nature and weapons from an early age, quickly became one of the most loved and respected figures of the region.
During Çakırcalı's lifetime, the Ottoman Empire was in decline. The region was the scene of various rebellions and conflicts. These conditions were the determining factors in the course of Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe's life.
Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe's father is Çakırcalı Koca Ahmet Efe, who is also an efe. Koca Ahmet Efe was killed by a police sergeant in Birgi in 1888. This incident was one of the most important factors in Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe's climb to the mountains.
After going to the mountains, Çakırcalı took part in various gangs during his youth. The experiences he gained during this period made him a powerful warrior. He founded his own gang in the early 1890s and started banditry activities in the Aegean Region.
During this period, there was great discontent among the people against the tyranny of rich lords and state officials. Taking this discontent as an opportunity, Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe took action after going to the mountains to help the oppressed people in the region and to ensure justice. He also helped those in need and protected the oppressed.
Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe's ascent to the mountains was an important turning point in the social and political history of the Aegean Region. Efe's actions reflected the reaction of the people of the region against the Ottoman Empire and contributed to the strengthening of the efe movement in the Aegean Region.
Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe quickly became one of the most famous zeybeks of the Aegean Region with the actions he performed. Over time, Efe's fame spread beyond the borders of the Ottoman Empire.
Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe was killed in a conflict on Karıncalı Mountain in Nazilli in 1911. It is claimed that when he was killed, his face was destroyed by his friends so that his body would not be recognized, as per his will. His body was buried in Nazilli after his first wife, Iraz Hanım, identified him from a mark found on his body. His body was taken from Nazilli by his youngest daughter Hatice Akkaş in 1948 and buried in his grave in Ödemiş Kayaköy.
His life is still told as a legend among the public today.
