Chelsea icon ‘not ruling out return’ amid ‘interest’ in replacing Man Utd boss Ten Hag
Areturn to Chelsea has reportedly ‘never been ruled out’ by Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel, who won the Champions League at Stamford Bridge.
The German manager was dismissed by new Blues co-owner Todd Boehly 16 months after leading them to European glory.
Summer 2024 will be full of managerial moves
Boehly’s decision to relieve Tuchel of his duties did not go down well and Chelsea’s dismal form since his departure has hardly justified the controversial call.
He was replaced by Graham Potter in September 2022 and did not manage again until taking on the Bayern job following the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann last March.
Tuchel won the Bundesliga by the skin of his teeth after an almighty bottlejob from Borussia Dortmund, but he has not been so fortunate this term, with Bayer Leverkusen unbeaten in all competitions and now the firm favourites to be crowned German champions.
As a result of Leverkusen’s success, Tuchel recently announced his decision to step down at the end of the season.
Incidentally, it is expected that Bayer boss Xabi Alonso will replace Tuchel at the Allianz Arena, although Liverpool are extremely keen on appointing the Spaniard.
The former Chelsea boss is eager to jump straight into another job this summer and there are a lot of possibilities.

A return to Stamford Bridge has been rumoured, while the Manchester United and Barcelona jobs reportedly appeal to him.
Blaugrana boss Xavi is another manager who will be stepping down from their role in the summer.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag is under increased pressure at Old Trafford and the club’s new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is yet to publicly back him.
Ten Hag and Chelsea’s Mauricio Pochettino are currently joint third in the Premier League sack race – only behind Chris Wilder and Vincent Kompany – and it would be surprising to see them both in charge at their respective clubs next season.
‘Thomas Tuchel has never ruled out a return to Chelsea’
With pressure growing on Pochettino and Tuchel set to become a free agent, there is a lot of talk about the latter coming back to the club where he won the Champions League.
According to Sky Germany transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, the German has not ruled out a return despite the fact he left on bad terms with Boehly.
Plettenberg does add that Tuchel is eager to manage in Spain at some point in his career and is ‘interested in the project at Manchester United’.
He wrote on X: ‘Thomas Tuchel has never ruled out a return to FC Chelsea. He still has the club in his sights.
‘His greatest short-term desire is to return to the Premier League. He doesn’t see his project there as complete yet.
‘As reported, he is also interested in the project at Manchester United. In Spain, he wants to coach FC Barcelona in Spain someday.’
Redknapp claims none of current Man Utd squad ‘would get into’ Sir Alex Ferguson’s team
Harry Redknapp has claimed that none of the current Man Utd squad would get into one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s former teams at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have had a poor second campaign under Erik ten Hag with Man Utd finishing rock bottom of their Champions League group and currently showing inconsistent form in the Premier League.
Harry Redknapp: Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd squad is ‘bang average’
Back-to-back defeats in the Premier League to Fulham and arch-rivals Man City has seen sixth-placed Man Utd drift to 11 points off fourth-placed Aston Villa, who occupy the final Champions League position as it stands, heading into the final 11 matches of the season.
There are question marks over whether Ten Hag will still be there at the start of next season and former West Ham boss Redknapp doesn’t think any of the current squad would make it into one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s sides.
Redknapp told Bet Victor: “I’m not sure about them – I thought they could finish in the top four at one point, but then they get beaten at home to Fulham and lose convincingly to Manchester City.
“I think they’re bang average to be honest – I said to someone the other night, ‘name me one player from this current United side who would get into Sir Alex Ferguson’s team’, and there isn’t one. That’s how it is now.

“I still make Tottenham favourites for fourth place. Aston Villa have been great too, but it’s beginning to look like a straight fight between those two clubs.
“At the moment, Manchester United are miles away – I don’t see them anywhere near winning the title or being close to doing so in the next few years either. I thought at one point they could finish in the top four this season, but then I watched that game against Fulham and I still reckon they’re miles away.”
Andy Cole: I doubt Antony will start next season at Old Trafford
Antony has been one of the most disap
pointing signings that Man Utd have made in recent times with the Brazilian – who has failed to score or assist a goal in the Premier League this season – signing from Ajax for £85m in the summer of 2022.
And former Man Utd striker Andy Cole reckons it’s hard to see Antony go into a third season at Old Trafford following his poor contribution.
Cole told Betfred: “Ultimately, I believe any decision regarding his future will be down to finances. Antony’s found his first two seasons in the Premier League very, very difficult. Everything in the game now is judged on stats and if you look at his, they’re very underwhelming.
“Wingers are judged on scoring and creating goals, so if you’re not doing that, then what are you actually doing? He has one goal and one assist this season, so if you’re looking at that as a prospective buyer, then you’re going to question how effective he can be for your team.
“I know the Eredivisie is completely different to the Premier League, but when he was at Ajax he was scoring and creating goals. In the Premier League, it’s not been like that for him, so will he get a third season? I really don’t know because the numbers haven’t been good enough for where Manchester United need to get to.
“Manchester City are the best team in the country and they have the likes of Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish and Jérémy Doku. Look at the amount of chances they create and score.
“They all produce more than Antony does. It’s a big, big difference, so it will be interesting to see what Manchester United do this summer regarding Antony.”
Solskjaer bemoans staggering Man Utd triple transfer miss that could’ve toppled Liverpool, Man City
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed the three players he would have loved to sign for Man Utd, including Real Madrid ace Jude Bellingham.
Man Utd were hoping to land Bellingham in 2020 after being hugely impressed by his rapid rise at Championship club Birmingham City. The central midfielder even travelled to hold talks with Man Utd chiefs, only to reject their advances in favour of a move abroad.
Ultimately, it was Borussia Dortmund who won the race for Bellingham, as they convinced the Englishman they could provide the best platform for him to develop and shine.
Dortmund paid £25million for Bellingham and he would go on to establish himself as one of the best young players in the world there before joining Real Madrid in a £115m deal last summer.

But things could have been far different for both Bellingham and Man Utd. During an appearance on The Overlap, Solskjaer has provided the inside track on Man Utd’s negotiations for the England star.
“Jude, he was in the building [Carrington],” the former striker admitted. “I was there, Sir Alex Ferguson was there, Bryan Robson and Eric Cantona were all there that day.
“We all spoke to him and sold it as well as we could, but he knew what he wanted, x amount of minutes in the first team.

Solskjaer discusses failed Man Utd swoop for Haaland
Bellingham is not the only player Man Utd missed out on before they turned into a superstar. Solskjaer went on to speak about both Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice.
“I had Haaland in Molde, for two seasons,” Solskjaer added. “The summer before I got here [to Man Utd], I rang the club and said, ‘You’ve got to sign this boy. He’ll be top class’.
“That was June, July 2018, and they said no. They had enough reports on players. Then I became the caretaker manager, and we’d sold Haaland to RB Salzburg.
“I tell the club straight away to buy him while he has a release clause. We knew that then, and no one else would’ve paid the money – €20m, it would’ve been a bargain.
“It was the club’s decision to not go for it then. We never made bids or went in for him, until after he started scoring for Salzburg.
“By then, everyone was there. His release clause then was still good – €60m.”
Man Utd failing to sign Bellingham and Haaland has been documented before, but Solskjaer has raised eyebrows by also discussing his admiration for Rice.
Former manager ‘really likes’ Declan Rice
“I really like him [Rice] as a player,” the Norwegian remarked. “We’ve discussed him a few times and I think we would’ve done well with him in midfield.
“His legs, covering the pitch, and I think he improved a lot on his playmaking as well. Obviously, he would’ve cost some money, but we could’ve and should’ve gone for him.”
Man Utd signing at least two of Bellingham, Haaland or Rice would have gone a long way in helping them get close to the Premier League’s leading clubs, which are currently Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal.
Signing all three could have made the Red Devils England’s best team, as that is how good they have performed this season at their respective clubs.
Instead, new Man Utd part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe will have to usher in several top-class signings to make the club truly competitive again. TEAMtalk has already revealed which Premier League ace is likely to arrive at Man Utd first this summer.

Chelsea to take enormous financial hit as ruthless Boehly greenlights sale of his own signing
Todd Boehly and Chelsea have reportedly decided to sell Marc Cucurella this summer, despite the fact they will have to take a big financial hit when he departs.
Cucurella shone at Brighton & Hove Albion under Graham Potter, winning the Seagulls’ Player of the Season award for his excellent displays at left wing-back during the 2021-22 campaign. Cucurella’s classy performances convinced Chelsea to spend £60million on him in August 2022, and Potter followed the player to Stamford Bridge the next month.
However, both Cucurella and Potter have failed to continue the huge success they had with Brighton during their respective spells at Chelsea. Potter was sacked in April last year, while Cucurella has looked like one of the weak links in the Chelsea team.
The Spaniard underwent surgery on an ankle problem in December and is getting back to full fitness, having appeared on the bench during the recent 2-2 draw with Brentford.
Despite Cucurella getting back in the mix for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, it is unlikely he will be able to save his Chelsea career. Ben Chilwell will remain ahead of him in the pecking order when fit, and Cucurella has struggled to operate at other defensive positions such as centre-half or right-back.
On Monday, Fabrizio Romano stated that Chelsea are taking a look at the 25-year-old’s situation and weighing up whether to sell him. Several La Liga clubs are understood to be interested in taking him back to Spain.

As per the latest from Football Insider, Chelsea have now made their decision and are highly likely to transfer list Cucurella in the coming months.
Cucurella is one of several ‘big-name Chelsea stars’ who will be offloaded. Not only will this help to streamline Pochettino’s squad, but it will also help the club avoid issues surrounding Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Chelsea set asking price for flop Marc Cucurella
After initially spending a huge £60m on the full-back, Chelsea are well aware that his value has since declined. Blues co-owner Todd Boehly is happy to sell Cucurella for just £30-35m, which means Chelsea could lose half the money they originally paid.
As the report mentions, Cucurella is far from the only player who will be sold by Chelsea during the next transfer window. Trevoh Chalobah and Conor Gallagher are also at risk, despite the latter proving to be an important player for Pochettino.
Those departures will help Chelsea to fund a huge move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen without getting into financial trouble with the Premier League. Napoli have managed to tie Osimhen down to a new contract which includes a massive £111m release clause.

Tottenham transfers: 10 to sell and 5 to buy in eye-catching Ange Postecoglou summer overhaul
Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham could have a very busy summer on their hands as the Australian looks to shape his first-team squad for the 2024/25 season and beyond, and TEAMtalk looks at how he could do it.
Postecoglou has worked wonders in his first season in charge in north London, despite having plenty of adversity to deal with, but it’s already clear which players are not suited to his style of football and where he needs to strengthen.
To that end, TT takes a look at 10 players the amiable Aussie should look to offload – not including free agents – and five players to buy, who would immediately give Postecoglou much greater quality to pick from.
Add in the talented crop of youngsters already training with the first-team squad, including the likes of Alfie Dorrington, Jamie Donley and Dane Scarlett, and Postecoglou will have a squad capable of challenging for top honours.
10 Tottenham players to sell
Japhet Tanganga
Currently out on loan at Millwall, Tanganga has failed to convince successive Tottenham managers that is worth trusting and with just a year left on his contract this summer will be the time to cash in.
Tanganga has been at the club since the age of 10 and had his best run in the side under Jose Mourinho. However, he’s failed to take his game to the next level and will not be missed if he moves on.
Sergio Reguilon
After a bright start to life in north London it’s pretty remarkable just how badly Reguilon has fallen off a cliff at Spurs.
The Spaniard has had loan spells at Atletico Madrid and Manchester United and is currently at Brentford. He will also be out of contract in 2025, so time is running out to recoup any sort of decent fee for his services.
Djed Spence
The mystery that is Djed Spence and why he has never really had a crack at even trying to convince successive managers that he is worth a punt in the right-back slot?
There have been rumours of an attitude issue for a player who seemingly has the game to be a top performer, and loans at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa probably tell their own story and how it will almost certainly end.
Ryan Sessegnon
Another talented player who has been at the club since 2019 but has only ever made 57 first-team appearances.
In fairness to Sessegnon has been incredibly unlucky with injuries and has never been able to try and hold down a regular starting spot.
To that end, it would be a massive shock if Spurs do not try and part ways with the player, although just how much they will receive for a player who is continuously injured remains to be seen. He is also out of contract in the summer of 2025.
Joe Rodon
Leeds want to keep Joe Rodon after his loan spell from Tottenham
This is a tricky one as Rodon has never been given the chances he should have been after signing from Swansea in 2020, despite looking like he could have been a good fit at Tottenham.
The Wales international is currently excelling on loan at Leeds and is a player who is good enough to be a regular starter at a top club and not a fourth or fifth choice in north London.
To that end, it makes sense to try and cash in this summer while he still has a year left on his contract. Leeds would no doubt be interested, if they can secure a Premier League return this season.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
Probably the least likely of all the players tipped to leave, given that he was linked with exits last summer and in January.
To put it bluntly, the Dane just does not suit the way Postecoglou wants his midfielders to play and never looks comfortable keeping the ball under pressure.
Atletico Madrid continue to be the front-runner for his signature and a summer exit appears almost certain.
Oliver Skipp
Tottenham sold the wrong midfielder to Leicester last summer when they offloaded Harry Winks, it should have been Skipp instead.
Winks’ all-action game is perfect for the slight myth that is ‘Ange-Ball’ while Skipp does not have the legs to get around the pitch in the same way.
He is also being used sparingly by Postecoglou and could easily be surplus to requirements come the summer.
Spurs could also recoup a decent fee for the 23-year-old, who remains under contract until 2027.
Tanguy Ndombele
An amazing talent who, it seems, will never fulfill any of it at Tottenham or maybe even elsewhere.
This summer will mark the club’s last opportunity to try and get any sort of decent money for a player who cost them £55million in 2019.
However, successive loans have shown that no clubs are willing to fork out a permanent fee for his services as it appears too much of a gamble.
Spurs may even end up having to pay up his contract just to get him off the books.
Bryan Gil
Another talented attacking player who has never done it on the Premier League stage.
There was always talk of Gil needing to beef up to get to grips with English football but it never really happened and it would not be a surprise if Tottenham cut their losses in the summer, especially with Manor Solomon already on board in his position.
Richarlison
The biggest casualty of all in this list in terms of how much Spurs spent on the player and the returns they have got as a result.
Daniel Levy forked out £60m to bring the Brazilian to north London and was rewarded with three goals in his first season at the club, albeit playing as Harry Kane’s deputy.
And while this season has seen a marked improvement, with 11 goals in 25 games, Richarlison still has too many off days and misses key chances that could be the difference between qualifying for Europe or ending that trophy drought that is now backed up at 16 years.
To that end, it’s fully expected that Tottenham will finally land a marquee replacement for Harry Kane this summer. And that is where we will begin on how Postecoglou can strengthen his starting XI and his squad overall.

5 players Tottenham should buy
Jonathan David
While Brentford’s Ivan Toney would be the pick here, it’s unrealistic to think that Daniel Levy will spend close to £100m on Kane’s replacement, especially given the rumours that the England skipper could return to north London at some point over the next two seasons.
Lille striker David represents that happy medium, in that he would not cost a fortune (probably around £43m), and at just 24 years of age still has plenty of room to improve his game.
The Canada international is renowned for his speed, movement and finishing ability, although he is not the biggest at 5ft 9in.
Since moving to France in 2020 he has scored 75 goals in 169 games but has previously admitted his desire to play in England.
“I don’t know if I can find myself anywhere other than the Premier League,” David told La Voic du Nord back in December 2022.
The fact that he can play as a No.9 and come deep for the ball to build attacks are also traits Postecoglou loves.
Conor Gallagher
This one is no secret for sure, with Spurs having chased the stand-in Chelsea skipper ever since it became common knowledge that the Blues would likely have to sell some of their homegrown talent to satisfy FFP regulations.
The England star’s future remains up in the air while he remains without a new contract, with his current one running out in the summer of 2025.
That means Chelsea would have to sell this summer to recoup anything like the £30m to £35m they want for his services.
Gallagher’s all-action style certainly fits the bill for Postecoglou and it does feel like there’s an inevitability about the transfer.
Pedro Neto
With Richarlison and Gil both sold in this model and Timo Werner likely shipped back to RB Leipzig, unless he has a remarkable end to the season, Tottenham will need another attacking player and Neto fits right in.
There have been growing rumours that Wolves will cash in on the player in the summer, with several clubs keen on his signature.
However, we revealed recently that Spurs hold an advantage over north London rivals Arsenal in the chase for the player.
Postecoglou got a first-hand look at Neto’s qualities in Wolves’ 2-1 win over his side recently, with the Portugal international setting up the winner for his side when showing his devastating pace on the break.
Sebastian Szymanski
Tottenham could raid Fenerbahce for Sebastian Szymanski
Exits for Hojbjerg and Skipp leave another place in Tottenham’s midfield and opens the door to a move for Fenerbahce star Szymanski.
The Poland international has been heavily tipped to make a switch to north London this summer, having made a massive impression in Turkish football.
The attacking midfielder would cost in the region of £30m but would be another strong addition to Postecoglou’s squad and provide James Maddison with immediate competition for a starting spot.
Kyle Walker-Peters
Bringing back the former Tottenham youngster makes sense on so many levels, not least because he can operate in both full-back positions and provide competition for Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie.
Walker-Peters quit Spurs back in 2020 when he made a £12m switch to Southampton but has taken his game to another level since then.
He is being heavily tipped to make a return to the Premier League this summer, if Southampton do not seal promotion, with Tottenham having a £30m buy-back clause in place to keep the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United at bay.
The 26-year-old, who made 24 appearances for Spurs before moving to the south coast, would also add to the homegrown quota.
