Buterin stated during a Reddit AMA hosted by the Ethereum Foundation's research team on January 10th that the gas limit has not been increased in nearly three years, the longest period in the protocol's history. He has advocated for a "modest" increase in the gas limit to potentially improve network throughput.
"Honestly, I think doing a modest gas limit increase even today is reasonable," Buterin said during the research team's eleventh AMA.
Buterin also made some quick estimates, estimating an increase to around 40 million. According to Etherscan, the current gas limit is 30 million, so Buterin proposes a 33% rise.
Following Ethereum's beginning in 2015, the average gas limit was around three billion, which has risen over time with network utilization and adoption.

The Ethereum gas limit is the maximum quantity of gas that can be spent on carrying out transactions or smart contract functions in a single block. The fee for conducting a transaction or executing a contract on the blockchain is known as gas.

raising the gas limit allows additional transactions to go into each block, theoretically boosting the network's general efficiency and capacity. However, it boosts hardware loads and makes it vulnerable for network spam and attacks.
A gas limit is set to prevent blocks from becoming too large, which would have an impact on network performance and synchronization. Validators can also dynamically adjust the gas limit within specifics parameters as they generate blocks. bng too large, which would have an impact on network performance and synchronization.
