Goygol Lake
One of the largest lakes in Azerbaijan It is located in the valley of Agsu river at the foot of Kepaz mountain, on the northern slope of Murovdag peak, in the west of Azerbaijan, in Goygol region. It belongs to Shamkirchay Basin. Its height above sea level is 1556 meters, its area is 0.78 square kilometers, its average depth is 30 meters, and its deepest point is 96 meters. Its length from south to north reaches 2800 meters, and its widest point reaches 800 meters. It is mainly fed by precipitation and the waters of the Upper Agsu River. Goygol was formed as a result of the collapse of the top of Kepaz mountain during a devastating earthquake near the city of Ganja in 1139, closing the valley of Agsu river.
Flora and fauna: 423 types of plants, including medicinal plants, grow in the area of the lake. 76 of them belong to trees and shrubs, and others belong to grass cover. Deer, roe deer, bear, wild boar, mountain goat, wolf, fox, jackal, badger, porcupine, forest cat, lynx live along the shores of the lake. Trout can also be found in the lake. The lake belongs to the territory of Goygol Reserve, which was created in 1965 for the purpose of protecting nature and animal world.
Goygol Lake, celebrated in poems, paintings and music as the country's favorite mountain lake, is located at the foot of Kepaz Mountain, surrounded by thick green forests that turn golden in autumn. Maralgöl, located nearby, is also very attractive. Apart from the Goygol National Park, which covers seven lakes, you can also get to know the heritage of the Germans who settled here two centuries ago and feel the atmosphere of the German villages.
