The baker's horn & my first post
Hey! This is my first post. 😊
I love learning about art history, architecture and stuff like that. In this blog, I want to capture my notes so that I can come back to them later and refresh my memory. I hope you will find something new and interesting for you here!
I suggest going directly to the post. 👇
In Holland there was a custom: when the bread was baked "the baker blew his horn, announcing that it was time to go for fresh bread".
Gabriel Metsu. A Baker Blowing his Horn. c.1660.
Job Berckheyde's ‘The Baker’ (about 1681). Worcester Art Museum
Job Adriaensz Berckheyde, «Lace Maker» 1666-1675
Pictured here is most likely the wife or other member of the baker's family.
Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685). The Baker sounding his Horn (B., Holl., G. 7), etching, circa 1664, on laid paper.
Georg Flegel (1566–1638). Stilleben mit Römer, Brezel und Mädeln. 1637. Oil on oak. Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History, Münster
In the glass, the broken off brezel looks very much like a crooked horn. But could it be a hint of a baker's horn?..
