The baker's horn & my first post
Hey! This is my first post. π
I love learning about art history, architecture and stuff like that. In this blog, I want to capture my notes so that I can come back to them later and refresh my memory. I hope you will find something new and interesting for you here!
I suggest going directly to the post. π
In Holland there was a custom: when the bread was baked "the baker blew his horn, announcing that it was time to go for fresh bread".
Gabriel Metsu. A Baker Blowing his Horn. c.1660.

Job Adriaensz Berckheyde, Β«Lace MakerΒ» 1666-1675
Pictured here is most likely the wife or other member of the baker's family.
Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685). The Baker sounding his Horn (B., Holl., G. 7), etching, circa 1664, on laid paper.
Georg Flegel (1566β1638). Stilleben mit RΓΆmer, Brezel und MΓ€deln. 1637. Oil on oak. Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History, MΓΌnster
In the glass, the broken off brezel looks very much like a crooked horn. But could it be a hint of a baker's horn?..
