Introduction

Within Temptation, a Dutch symphonic metal band, was formed in April 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. While critics often categorize them as gothic metal and symphonic metal, the band's albums showcase a diverse range of influences, highlighting their musical experimentation and versatility. In an interview, den Adel described their style as falling into the symphonic rock genre with various influences, asserting that they consider themselves more of an atmospheric melodic symphonic metal/rock band with gothic elements. Following the release of their debut album "Enter" in 1997, Within Temptation gained prominence in the Dutch underground scene. It wasn't until 2001, with the single "Ice Queen" from their second album "Mother Earth," that they became widely known to the public, reaching No. 2 on the Dutch charts. The band received the Conamus Exportprijs, a Dutch music award, for four consecutive years, with an additional win in 2016. Their subsequent albums, "The Silent Force" (2004) and "The Heart of Everything" (2007), debuted at No. 1 on the Dutch charts, solidifying their international recognition. In 2008, Within Temptation released "Black Symphony," a live album recorded with the Metropole Orchestra. This was followed by another live album in 2009, titled "An Acoustic Night at the Theatre," featuring acoustic renditions of their songs. The band's fifth studio album, "The Unforgiving," released in March 2011, marked a shift towards new musical territories beyond symphonic metal. Their exploration of different genres continued with the release of the sixth studio album, "Hydra," in early 2014. This album featured guest appearances from various artists and showcased collaborations that expanded their musical horizons. In February 2019, Within Temptation released their seventh studio album, "Resist," incorporating influences from industrial and EDM, demonstrating their ongoing evolution. Their latest studio effort, "Bleed Out," released on October 20, 2023, reflects influences from metalcore and djent, while still paying homage to their initial gothic metal inclinations. As of 2016, the band had already achieved remarkable success, selling more than 3.5 million albums worldwide.

Musical Style:

Within Temptation's debut album, "Enter," released in 1997, was characterized by music critics as a blend of two heavy metal subgenres: gothic metal and doom metal. Described as "gloomy, doomy, slow-moving, atmospheric, symphonic gothic metal," the album drew comparisons to bands like Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy within the same genre. The guitar riffs, keyboard work, and the contrasting voices of lead vocalists Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt received praise.
During their early years, a gothic visual aesthetic was a prominent part of Within Temptation's style, reflecting the influence of gothic metal on their sound.
The band's 1998 EP, "The Dance," was considered crucial in the band's development, showcasing their musical growth by exploring orchestral and neo-classical metal parameters.
The release of their second album, "Mother Earth," marked a turning point in their musical style. With only den Adel remaining as the lead vocalist, the band shifted towards more melodic, Celtic, and folk-influenced songs. Critics welcomed the change, noting that the album "reveals new dimensions in the concept of metal."
Produced by Daniel Gibson, "The Silent Force" was classified as "very melodic, catchy, and relaxing."
In 2007, "The Heart of Everything" brought a division among critics regarding the band's new direction. Some appreciated the varied elements, describing the album as having "the depth and complexity of classical music and the dark edge of gothic metal," while others were divided on the changes.
The band's fifth studio album, "The Unforgiving," released in 2011, marked a significant shift in musical direction. While generally well-received, some critics were resistant to the changes, with comparisons to "1980s pop, rock, and metal" influences. The album represented a departure from their previous sound.
To commemorate their 15th anniversary, Within Temptation covered 15 famous songs, releasing them as "The Q-Music Sessions" album. This diverse collection featured reworked covers of pop songs, indie, and folk rock tracks, showcasing a departure from their original sound.
The band's sixth studio album, "Hydra," released in 2014, symbolized the varied nature of their music. Described by guitarist Robert Westerholt as a representation of the mythical monster Hydra, the album embraced different facets of their musical identity. Critics praised the band for finding the right balance between various musical changes, defying stereotypes during their subsequent tour.
