How I Found Tennis and Fell in Love with the Game
It all began with the Amga Games. I had no initial interest in tennis; my attention was fixated on combat swimming and archery, disciplines I found fascinating and physically challenging. However, what pulled me toward the stadium every day was not the allure of these sports, but Simba—someone who holds a dear place in my heart. As part of her preparation for the competition, I would accompany her daily to the stadium where she trained relentlessly for her chosen sport: tennis.
Simba’s passion for tennis was evident from the start. She trained with such intensity and focus that it was no surprise when she made it to the final list of participants for the competition. Watching her dedicate herself to the sport sparked something in me, though I didn’t realize it at first. Simba went on to compete in two categories, ultimately winning herself a gold and a bronze medal. Her determination and success were inspiring, but what truly captivated me was the sport itself. Somewhere along the way, I found myself paying more attention to tennis than to the archery and combat swimming I had initially come for.

The Spark of Interest
As the tournament progressed, I was drawn to the dynamics of tennis. From the fast-paced rallies to the strategic placement of shots, I couldn’t help but be intrigued. Simba’s matches became the highlight of my days. I learned to count scores, cheered her on from the sidelines, and marveled at her precision and grace on the court. By the time she won her medals, I was hooked.
After the competition, Simba noticed my growing interest in tennis. One evening, as we discussed her journey and my newfound fascination, she introduced me to her coach. She emphasized the importance of starting my journey under proper guidance. Although I was hesitant at first, her encouragement and belief in my potential made me agree to give it a try.
The Challenge of Commitment
My first session with the coach was an eye-opener. He made it clear that if I wanted to learn, I would need to dedicate time to the sport. This was easier said than done. My work schedule was demanding, and carving out time three times a week seemed nearly impossible. Despite my initial enthusiasm, I struggled to keep up. The first week was a challenge—I was late to the court almost every day. By the second week, I couldn’t continue due to the end-of-year celebrations and a planned vacation in Lagos.
The break, however, gave me time to reflect. Upon my return, I resolved to commit fully. I reorganized my schedule and made it a point not to miss training sessions. Slowly but surely, tennis became a part of my routine.
A Community of Passion
As I progressed, a few of my friends became interested in the sport as well. They joined me on the court, and soon, we had formed a small community of like-minded individuals. Tennis brought us together, creating a sense of camaraderie that extended beyond the game. It no longer felt like just a sport—it was an experience we shared, a common thread that tied us together.
Our coach played a significant role in deepening our love for tennis. He designed engaging drills and introduced us to the tactical side of the game, ensuring we were always challenged and intrigued. The training sessions became something we eagerly anticipated, and before we knew it, tennis had become more than a hobby—it was an addiction.
The Transformation
Within a month, my life had changed. I found myself playing tennis not just on training days but whenever we could squeeze in a match. The sport was no longer a struggle to fit into my schedule; it was something I made time for. My learning curve was steep, thanks to the coach’s efforts and the supportive environment created by my friends.
Tennis quickly became a cornerstone of my fitness routine. The cardio benefits were unmatched, and I felt stronger and more agile than ever before. The mental clarity and stress relief it provided were just as valuable. It was more than a sport—it was therapy, a way to reset and recharge.
A Lifelong Love
Today, I can confidently say that tennis is my favorite game. It’s a sport that combines physical exertion, strategic thinking, and sheer fun. It’s a game that everyone should try, regardless of age. The benefits—both physical and mental—are truly transformative. Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, build a sense of community, or simply find a new passion, tennis offers it all.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the Amga Games and, more importantly, for Simba. What started as a simple act of support for her turned into a journey that has enriched my life in countless ways. Tennis is no longer just a sport to me; it’s a part of who I am, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
