Doutzen Kroes, born on January 23, 1985, is a renowned Dutch fashion model who embarked on her modeling career in 2003 in the Netherlands. Shortly after, her agency sent her to New York, where she gained recognition by lingerie brand Victoria's Secret. She held the prestigious title of Victoria's Secret Angel from 2008 to 2014, becoming the second Dutch Angel following Karen Mulder. Additionally, Kroes has served as a brand ambassador for L'Oréal Paris since 2006.
Known for her success in the modeling industry, Kroes has consistently been among the highest-paid models, with an estimated annual income exceeding 5 million since 2008. Doutzen Kroes was born on January 23, 1985, in the village of Eastermar. Her parents are Geartsje Leistra, who worked as a nurse and later as a teacher, and Johan Kroes, a psychotherapist. Both of her parents were champion speed skaters in the 1970s. During her childhood, Kroes harbored dreams of becoming a professional speed skater. She has a younger sister named Rens, who works as a nutritionist.
Modelling
Describing herself as a tomboy during her youth, Doutzen Kroes hadn't initially considered a career in modeling. However, in 2003, she sent snapshots to the Paparazzi Model Management agency in Amsterdam, and this marked the beginning of her modeling career.
In 2005, Kroes was honored as Model of The Year on Vogue.com by readers. She graced the cover of Vogue in May 2007, recognized as one of the World's Next Top Models, alongside other models like Chanel Iman. Kroes also appeared in the prestigious 2008 Pirelli Calendar.
A documentary released in 2006 provided insights into Kroes' life as a model during Milan Fashion Week and explored her perspectives on the modeling industry. In July 2007, Forbes listed Kroes as the fourteenth highest-earning supermodel, estimating her total earnings at $1.5 million over the previous twelve months. Her financial success continued to rise, securing the fifth position in 2008 with an estimated income of 6 million. Forbes consistently ranked her in the fifth position in 2009, 2010, and 2012, each year with an income around 6 million. In 2014, she climbed to the second position on Forbes' list, having earned 8 million the previous year.
In August 2008, Victoria's Secret officially announced Doutzen Kroes as the newest Victoria's Secret Angel, confirming her status as one of the brand's prestigious models. Her first campaign as a Victoria's Secret Angel was titled Supermodel Obsessions.
A wax figure of Kroes is displayed in the Amsterdam branch of Madame Tussaud's wax museum. From November 2009 to July 2010, Kroes contributed a monthly column about her life for the Dutch edition of Marie Claire.
In February 2010, Kroes made a return to the catwalk for Prada during fashion week, alongside fellow Angels Alessandra Ambrosio and Miranda Kerr. Prada received praise for featuring a curvy model like Kroes in the fashion show.
September 2013 marked a historic moment for Kroes as she became the first model to appear on the cover of four international editions of Vogue in a single month.In 2014, Kroes starred in the new Calvin Klein Reveal Fragrance commercial alongside Charlie Hunnam and continued her longstanding contracts. On November 24, 2011, Doutzen Kroes made her debut in Nova Zembla, which was the first Dutch 3D film. Besides her successful modeling career, Kroes has pursued acting and has been taking acting classes in New York City for several years. She expressed her plans to participate in more movie projects in the future.
Kroes appeared in the superhero film Wonder Woman, taking on the role of an Amazon warrior. This marked her venture into the realm of blockbuster films and showcased her versatility beyond the world of modeling.
Doutzen Kroes is actively engaged in philanthropy and serves as an advocate for various causes. She is associated with the non-profit organization Dance4Life, which employs music and dance to educate young people about HIV and AIDS prevention. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Doutzen Kroes has been involved in controversies related to spreading conspiracy theories about COVID-19 and vaccines. She has shared anti-vaccine views on social media, expressing reluctance to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and promoting misinformation about the pandemic. These actions have sparked criticism and controversy, particularly given her public profile and influence. Despite her wealth and success, her engagement in spreading misinformation while applying for government compensation for loss of income due to COVID-19 has drawn additional scrutiny and condemnation.
