What is Network

A network is a collection of computers, servers, mainframes, network devices or other devices connected to each other to allow sharing of data. One of the best examples of a network is the Internet, which connects millions of people all over the world.

Network Characteristics

Topology :-

The geometric arrangement of a computer system is called topology. Topology is the shape or layout of a network. The topology of a network determines how the various nodes of the network are connected to each other and how they communicate with each other. Topology can be physical or logical. Common topologies include bus, star, and ring.

Protocol :-

A protocol is a set of rules and signals used to communicate between computers on a network. It controls data communication. It represents an agreement between communicating devices. Without a protocol, two devices can be connected but cannot communicate, just like a person who understands Japanese will not understand Hindi. The most popular protocol for LAN is Ethernet.

Architecture :-

Networks can be broadly classified as using either peer-to-peer or 9 client/2 server architectures.

Examples of Network Devices

• Desktop computers, laptops, mainframes and servers

• Consoles and thin clients

• Firewalls

• Bridges

• Repeaters

• Network interface cards

• Switches, hubs, modems and routers

• Smartphones and tablets

• Webcams

Types of Network

LAN (Local Area Network) :-

Its full name is Local Area Network. It is a network that is used to connect two or more computers. Local Area Network is a network that works at the local level. It is called LAN in short. It is a computer network that covers local areas such as home, office, or building groups.

Features:-

1. It is limited to one room or one building.

2. Its data transfer speed is high.

3. It does not require renting an external network.

4. The data is safe in it.

5. It is easy to organize data in it.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

Its full name is Metropolitan Area Network. It is a high speed network that can carry voice, data and images at a speed of 200 megabytes per second or more up to a distance of 75 km. It is a network bigger than LAN and smaller than WAN. One city is connected to another city through this network.

Under this, two or more local area networks are connected together. These are two computer networks located within the boundaries of a city. 9 Routers, switches and hubs together form a metropolitan area network.

Features :-

1. Its maintenance is difficult.

2. Its speed is high.

3. It is spread over a distance of 75 km.

WAN (Wide area Network) :-

Its full name is Wide Area Network. It is a large network in terms of area. This network is not limited to only one building or one city but it connects the whole world i.e. it is the largest network in which data is sent and received safely.

In this network two computers are connected to each other through leased line or switch circuit. The geographical area of this network is large like a network spread across the whole city, country or continent. Internet is a good example of this. ATM facility of banks is an example of wide area network.

Features :-

1. It is a wireless network.

2. In this, data can be sent and received through signals or satellite light.

3. It is the largest network.

4. Through this, we can transfer data all over the world.
