Turkey's automotive industry has seen significant milestones, with two notable developments standing out: the Devrim automobile, the country's first domestically produced car, and TOGG, Turkey's first electric vehicle (EV) brand. These two initiatives, separated by decades, represent Turkey's ongoing ambition to innovate and compete in the global automotive market.

Devrim: A Symbol of National Ambition

The Devrim (meaning "Revolution" in Turkish) project began in 1961 as a bold attempt by Turkey to establish its own automotive industry. The project was initiated by then-President Cemal Gürsel, who envisioned a car entirely designed and manufactured in Turkey. Within a remarkable 129 days, a team of Turkish engineers and technicians from the Eskişehir Railway Factory produced four prototypes.
Despite this impressive feat, the Devrim's journey was short-lived. During a public demonstration on October 29, 1961, one of the Devrim cars ran out of fuel, an incident that overshadowed its engineering achievements and led to public ridicule. The project was soon shelved, with only a single Devrim prototype preserved in the Tülomsaş Museum in Eskişehir. Nevertheless, Devrim remains a symbol of Turkish ingenuity and determination, a precursor to the country’s later automotive endeavors.

TOGG: Leading the Charge in Electric Mobility

Fast forward to the 21st century, and Turkey is once again making headlines with TOGG (Türkiye'nin Otomobili Girişim Grubu), its first domestically produced electric vehicle. Founded in 2018, TOGG is a consortium of five major Turkish companies: Anadolu Group, BMC, Kök Group, Turkcell, and Zorlu Holding, with support from the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB).
TOGG's mission is to spearhead Turkey's entry into the burgeoning electric vehicle market, aligning with global trends towards sustainable transportation. The first TOGG vehicle, an electric SUV, was unveiled in December 2019. This vehicle, set for mass production in 2022, features state-of-the-art technology, including advanced driver assistance systems, a high-capacity battery offering over 300 kilometers of range, and rapid charging capabilities.
One of TOGG's standout features is its commitment to smart technology. The vehicle is designed with an advanced infotainment system and connectivity features, allowing for seamless integration with smart city infrastructures. This positions TOGG not just as a car manufacturer, but as a pioneer in the digital mobility ecosystem.

Bridging the Past and Future

The stories of Devrim and TOGG highlight Turkey's evolving automotive ambitions. Devrim represents the nation's initial foray into automotive manufacturing, a testament to early innovation and national pride. Though it faced setbacks, it laid the groundwork for future endeavors.
TOGG, on the other hand, reflects Turkey's modern aspirations to become a significant player in the global EV market. With a focus on sustainability, advanced technology, and smart mobility, TOGG is poised to contribute significantly to the global shift towards electric transportation.
In conclusion, Devrim and TOGG encapsulate the spirit of Turkish innovation across different eras. Devrim’s legacy as Turkey's first automobile remains a proud historical landmark, while TOGG signifies a forward-looking vision, aiming to place Turkey at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution. Together, they narrate a compelling story of ambition, resilience, and the pursuit of technological excellence in Turkey's automotive industry.
