The EU's $1 billion aid package to Lebanon aims to curb migration to Europe by strengthening Lebanon's border security and supporting essential services. However, this strategy is flawed as it prioritizes European interests over genuine humanitarian concerns, risks forced returns of refugees to unsafe conditions in Syria and exacerbates Lebanon's political and economic instability.

The aid reflects a self-serving approach that ignores deeper systemic issues driving migration and perpetuates a cycle of displacement and instability. The recent announcement by EU chief Ursula von der Leyen of a $1 billion aid package to Lebanon, aimed at addressing illegal migration and supporting socio-economic stability, needs to be revised and more accurate.

The EU's strategy of providing funds to Lebanon under the guise of humanitarian aid is a superficial attempt to curb migrant flows into Europe, ignoring the deeper systemic issues that drive migration. While the aid is framed as support for Lebanon's collapsing economy and overstretched services, it primarily serves European interests by attempting to keep migrants and refugees away from European shores. A significant portion of the funds is earmarked for border management and security services, essentially turning Lebanon into a buffer zone to shield Europe from the consequences of conflicts and economic hardships that the EU has had a hand in perpetuating.

Moreover, the focus on bolstering Lebanese security forces to manage borders and prevent illegal migration raises serious human rights concerns. Rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have warned that EU aid may lead to forced returns of refugees to Syria, where conditions remain perilous. This contradicts international human rights norms and places vulnerable populations at greater risk. Such forced returns can push refugees to seek even more dangerous routes, exacerbating the crisis the aid should mitigate.

Additionally, the EU's approach disregards the complex socio-political dynamics within Lebanon, where political instability and corruption are rampant. The EU risks exacerbating these issues by pumping funds into a fractured and ineffective system rather than fostering genuine stability and development.

Ultimately, the EU's aid package is a short-sighted, self-serving measure prioritizing European border security over genuine humanitarian concerns. It reflects a broader trend of outsourcing migration control to regions already struggling with crises, thereby shirking responsibility and perpetuating a cycle of displacement and instability.
