Once you know what the word means, it is not only extremely unpleasant to hear it as a noun, but it also sounds even worse when you hear it again as a verb and it is tied to you.

Pity. What a shame. That's just unfortunate. being pitied

According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, pity is defined as "a sympathetic sorrow for someone." As this is a natural response to empathy, it may not be all that unpleasant on its own. But since calling someone that already makes you feel horrible, why feel that way about yourself when your mind is such a powerful weapon of our reality?

Consider this circumstance.

You're presumably playing volleyball for your secondary school and competing in the state finals. All of the school has watched you play, and if you do say so yourself, you are a great player.

One day you become hurt while participating in a rigorous practice session.

Your expectations have been dashed, so your first emotion is likely anger. From there, your emotions are likely to swing between anger and sadness. But as you are hoisted onto the stretcher and sent to the school sick bay, your teammates, your coach, and your other students feel sorry for you. They would react right away like that.

If you don't struggle with low self-esteem, you'll notice that yours isn't self-pitying, and for good reason. Your mind is well aware that sympathy offers no solutions. It usually only draws attention to a predicament you'd like not be in rather than truly offering a remedy.

Your mind's reaction to an exaggerated version of the circumstance you've found yourself in is self pity. Furthermore, indulging in that only makes you appear foolish.

The next best course of action for damage control is to take control of these circumstances, particularly if your initial response to these events is not self-pity. Additionally, how your mind responds to certain circumstances that appear to be beyond your control can have an impact on how they turn out in the end. Basically, pretend to succeed until you do.

As you are being escorted to the sick bay, you are grinning. Even if you can't stand up straight and are in excruciating pain, your teammates follow and you make jokes as you go. your companions

Laugh back, as quick one-liners and "omo this stuff no even dull you o."s fill the air. Instantly, the situation was turned to your advantage. Your leg is bandaged by the doctor, who assures you that your knee will recover in time for the Tournament in three weeks. You can start crying right now because damage? Controlled. Untainted ego.
