Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen, born September 23, 1949, is an American rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist, widely known as "the Boss." Over a career spanning six decades, Springsteen has released 21 studio albums, most of which feature his backing band, the E Street Band. He is recognized as a pioneer of heartland rock, a genre blending mainstream rock with socially conscious lyrics depicting working-class American life. Raised Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey, Springsteen's upbringing was influenced by his mother, Adele Ann, a legal secretary and the primary earner in the family, and his father, Douglas Frederick "Dutch" Springsteen, who worked various jobs, including as a bus driver. Springsteen has two younger sisters, Virginia and Pamela, with Pamela briefly pursuing acting before turning to photography, later contributing to his album artwork.

His maternal grandfather, originally from Vico Equense, Italy, immigrated through Ellis Island and eventually became a lawyer, leaving a lasting impression on Springsteen. The Springsteen surname, originating from Groningen in the Netherlands, is topographic, meaning "jump stone," referring to stepping stones used on unpaved streets or between houses. Later that year, his mother took out a loan to buy him a $60 Kent guitar, a gesture he immortalized in his song "The Wish".

By 1965, Springsteen became involved with the Castiles, thanks to Tex and Marion Vinyard, local sponsors of young bands. He became the lead guitarist and one of the lead singers of the group. His prolific songwriting attracted influential figures like managers Mike Appel and Jim Cretecos, who introduced him to Columbia Records talent scout John Hammond. Hammond auditioned Springsteen in May 1972.

In October 1972, Springsteen assembled a new band for his debut album, "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J." This ensemble eventually evolved into the E Street Band, although the name wasn't formalized until September 1974.
