This article is not a movie review but a reaction and what i felt after watching the the movie Civil War (2024), it is not only unnerving but sobering in the sense that you can't help but ask the question "What if?" The comparison between the movie and real life is unavoidable, factors like freedom of speech, press freedom, intolerance towards race, religion, ethnicity and gender is becoming a feature in almost all aspect of American society. Although the movie did not show how the civil war started but all the factors are there, that it will make you think "is this how it will start in America", That question is sobering, what happened to the land of the "Free", did it become so "Free" that it took it for granted and live it's life unmindful of other's suffering as long as it can enjoy freedom to hell with the rest? Some might say the politics and corruption has got a lot to do with it, yes it's true in almost all cases of politics but the question is why did we let it happen? Are we enjoying our freedom so much that we became naïve and trust our politicians will not tamper or restrict it? Are we enjoying our freedom so much that we trust our businesses will not do anything to hinder our freedom in any way possible? Are we enjoying our freedom so much that all that matters is we have more money and more food than our neighbors that we forgot what empathy solidarity means? Are we enjoying our freedom so much that we became lazy and let others decide what is fact and what is not? Are we enjoying our freedom so much that we build a cocoon around us, safe and protected from what's going on around us? Sometimes you want to just shut yourself down and enjoy the hours that you have after a grueling day making a living but we cannot just shut ourselves and ignore what's happening around us because what happens around us will eventually happen to us. Some of you may react and say it's just a movie, yes, it's just a movie but, What if?
