Australia’s First Indigenous Sporting Captain
The Wallabies, Australia’s National Rugby Union side have been a dominating sporting side for many years. In fact the Wallabies versus New Zealand (The Bledisloe Cup) is one of the great sporting events on the annual calendar.
What a lot of people don’t know however, is that Mark Ella, who played for the Wallabies from 1980 to 1984, with a total of 25 caps (appearances) was the first Indigenous player of any sport to captain a National side.
He also played alongside his twin brother Glen and Gary.
Mark Ella went down in history as one of the best Rugby Union players in Australian history - with former great, David Campese saying that Ella was the best player he’s ever played with.
During this period, Australia won the Grand slam defeating all 4 home nations - England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and Ella scored a try in each of the 4 games, a feat he is also very famous for.
