Gerard Butler was born on November 13, 1969, in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, as the youngest of three children to Margaret and Edward Butler, a bookmaker. He comes from a Catholic family of Irish descent.

When he was six months old, his family moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. However, a year later, following his parents' separation, his mother returned to Scotland with Gerard.
Growing up, Butler attended St Mirin's & St Margaret's High School in Paisley, where he served as head boy.

He later gained admission to the University of Glasgow School of Law, and during his teenage years, he also attended the Scottish Youth Theatre. His relationship with his father was strained, and he didn't see him again until the age of 16.

As a university student, Butler served as the president of the university law society, though he later admitted to having somewhat maneuvered his way into the position. However, a challenging period in his life came when, at the age of 22, his father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away.
