The Beginning of the Journey out of My personal Hell
Where I left off previously
This is a continuation to the series from Writing my way out of 9 - 5 hell. I will try to make the article much more shorter and to be more digestible while actionable. Nothing worst than an advice or action plan that isn't practical.
The specific audience for this article is for those whom are still struggling to write or those whom are looking for a way to make extra money on the side. With god's grace and hard work, I hope what I am putting forward from here on out could help them or you my readers even a little bit. Personally for me, the challenge is for me to improve my skills along the way.
I decide to create a series of write up that will serve as a blueprint to myself (and to you my reader if you in need of one). There are no sequence in which you need to apply this as all of part of the series may be done in junction to each other. As I am writing this article, I am actually talking to myself. I am teaching myself, and the best way to improve is to teach. Killing 3 birds with one stone, I guess. Teaching myself, sharing it with you, and earning while at it.
There are many tips available online, but they aren't truthful or at least being straight about it. Most of the time I had to cherry pick the tips to suit my own conditions and problems. Hence I decided to create this "blueprint" for those who needs it. In future, I will compile everything for easier access.
If you miss it, you can go back to the kick start of the series here: Writing my way out of 9 - 5 hell
*Footnote: If you want to keep your job and have a side business or one of it only, this write up is also dedicated for you. The real point of this write up is to serve as a guideline and the foundations of creating an income through skills that you already have and vice versa.*
Why blueprint?
To be honest with you, although I call it a blueprint, this series will be more of a concept. This series will serve me as a journal where I put anecdote to things that I stumble upon during this journey. It can be a blueprint, and it can be an experimental journal. For some it can be a general guide. That depends on what you wish to do with it. It can be all. My wish is that it can serve a purpose in your journey as it will be for me.

I do hope we'll get a function to separate our write up to different sections of the blog so that we can sort our write up. But! That is for the future endeavor, and we have yet to see how this platform will flourish.
Ultimately, it will be a journey for my "Way out of 9-5 hell" that we may, or may not share the resemblance in experience. Hence it will be filled with right/wrong decisions, accumulated knowledges, challenges and triumph. With that out of the way, let's embark in this journey together.
It starts here

I often emphasized this a lot in most of my writings, that reality deeply intertwined and start with just ideas in our head. Ideas are formed as a result of the mixture in experience and knowledge. Most of the time, we think that our ideas are shit and that is what we need to tackle during this first part of our journey.
There are no such thing as shit idea, really. What you often perceived as "wrong" is in reality of things, is "right" for another person on the other side. The dictator for the reality of your perspective, are a result of the circumstances that you are in or have been in. If words are the window to the world, then ideas are the window to the reality that inhabits that world. Ideas are always a valuable currency.
The big difference about other's ideas and yours is the confidence behind it, that leads to action.
Similarly, the constant argument you have with yourself in your head are the reflection of the reality you are living in. Hence, whenever you arrived in a decision making situation, you often choose what dictated your current situation. In other word, the perspective of your reality. Because otherwise, it will be uncomfortable. That, is the core of being a human. A good indicator is being uncomfortable. Of course, be uncomfortable within moral landscape.
What if you decide to do something different than what the society deemed peculiar? Will you be the weirdo? Or will you be the modern days Picasso? Will you be the odd one out? Or will you be the next Jeff Bezoz. Will you be able to earn, in a way that society deems as "not possible"? That is something for you to decide. I decided to try the otherwise. And to do that, I understand that I have to know how.
How to go about your how
This is the first stepping stone: Knowing your way out. The big HOW. Without knowing your way out, you are doomed to roam the vast space of reality - where you'll get distracted and be in a state of lack in focus. This is where other's reality get to you. Give it whatever fancy name you want, it will not change the fact that most individual are a part of the plan made by other people.
No one says it has to be pretty: Resource: - HERE
I argued that to know your way out, you have to first be aware of your skill sets. You may ask yourselves this question: What am I really good at? How you answer this question, will bring forth your unique solution to "Knowing your way out". That may seem like an obvious thing to say - but most people has no clue how to answer this question and tend to do things that adhere to other needs, instead of doing things for themselves.
Bear in mind that answers like "I'm good at helping others", are not the answer you are looking for. The point of this exercise/question is for you to rate yourselves as honest as you possibly can. The two answers that you will come out with, are "I'm good at" and "I'm bad at". The former will determine what "way out" is the best suited for you, while the later answer will lead you to "what to learn". Your answer must be within the domain of actual skills that can help you create a side business.
As an example:
What I'm good at: Teaching
Way out (one of possible way): Writing
What I'm bad at: structuring
What to learn: writing frame work
My own possible way out

Following my own advice, I come up with a few ideas of how to get out of my own personal hell. I'm willing to bet that some of my ideas will keep on evolving as I grow and add more skills in the future but for near feasible future, what I have found out didn't surprise me at all. I am more surprised at the fact how honest I could be in this situation. How I arrived there is that I've decided to create my own skill matrix table to determine:
- What skills that I need to improve
- What skills I'm already good at
- What skills that I have no need to reach my goal
All 3 above are connected to my end goal. And of course, all of them are connected to each other because all of these skill sets are me at the present time.
For example, one of my side works that I plan to make as a main income in the future is by Writing,
What skills that I need to improve
I believe that a well written and structured article is very important in my pursuit of writing. As I write for hobby in the past, I don't think much about writing framework. Every good writer has a working framework. That framework exist because there are reasons to why writers wrote every piece of their work to begin with. Without framework, you can't start, and finish. It is critical. If I want to be a successful writer, I can't swing around my pen and keyboard just for the sake of the sound of clickity clackity, then my work has no purpose. And so I identified that learning how to utilize framework for my writing is the highest priority among the 3 questions to answer.
What skills I'm already good at
One of the skills that I already good at is time management. This skill will be very important if I want to create a sustainable personal business into the future. But since I'm already good at it, I decided to put the priority alert on this skill as second. Although I will, from time to time, go back to learn the basics to keep this skill sharp. As it is not my main priority, it will automatically sits at the back of my head as second in priority. Time management is important because it helps me to deliver my work in timely manner before any due dates that I have set in the first place.
What skills that I have no need for
As a lifelong student, and I mean that quite literally, I have been exposed to many hours of public presentation. Be it in class, the auditorium, one to one, corporate, and etc. You name it. Public presentation has become one of my specialty when it comes to my corporate career. I love presentation, but I despised the fact that I have to do it for someone else. Lucky for me, writing has nothing to do with public presentation, well, not in its entirety, but enough for me to ignore the skill set. This skill will serve me little to no use for the goal I'm setting and thus it will be ignored and kept in a storage room.
What you want
It is important to note that personally for me, that I WANT WRITING to be my main income stream in the next 10 years and probably more. What you decide to do for your side work, aside from the job you have right now, will affect the skill matrix you drawn out for yourselves. I will share my own skill matrix that I have drawn in excel behind a paywall since that is one of my intellectual assets. But that is for future plan.
But rest assured, the template that I shared with you above is more than enough for you to identify your strength and weakness. The simpler it is, the better it will be. It might not be accurate, but accuracy is not the main goal here. It is to start with what you have and don't have.
Why I pick this subject as the first of the series
You'll be thinking that "Well, isn't it obvious?". But my argument is this, if its obvious and easy to do, then why most people still struggle? Some people choose to do what they are good at and its very valid to do so, but where's the challenge in that? Some does what they good at but still struggle! Something is missing, and that is the very point of this write up.
To tap into your creativity, one has to be always be in uncomfortable enough spot to invoke that spark, that makes life a little bit fun and adventurous. Making life much more meaningful to live in. In my most humblest of opinion, this is the only way to grow and learn. Apart from making mistakes.
One of these days, people who stayed in the comfort zone for a very long time will get bored and miserable for their jobs. Seen that a lot. On top of that, what new skills have you learn from that mundane job anyway after working for 20 years? No disrespect to them workers who made our lives much better, but the world is digitalizing, and the ones who will do better are the ones who embraced and skill up with the change.
Maybe the short answer is procrastination, comfort, and fear. But I'll leave the mindset for another day as this is an article focused more on the first milestone. Identification.
You may use the template as many as you can. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. What you want to get from this exercise is to gauge your own understanding of where you are currently. You can't navigate towards your end goal, if you don't have a goal - but you may never embark on that journey altogether because you have no idea where you are right now.
As the slogan that catch the eyes of people worldwide says, JUST.DO.IT.
Honestly, as smartly as you possibly can that is.
This is the first of the series, and its important to get this sorted out sooner rather than later. If you find this write up helpful, you may share it with your friends and family who are trying to look for a way out. Our next article will dive deeper on actual side works that you can do with few of my takes on it. I will not share what I didn't try before, so feel free to share your own experience in the comment section.
