Dragon Ball (Japanese: ドラゴンボール, romanized: Doragon Bōru; "Dragon Ball") is a media franchise created by Akira Toriyama. The manga series on which the series is based, written by Toriyama, was published in 42 tankōbon volumes in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine between December 1984 and June 1995. Toriyama was inspired by the Chinese novel Journey to the West when creating the series. Dragon Ball is about the adventures of Son Goku. The events in the story revolve around Goku's ability to improve himself in martial arts throughout his life, from childhood to adulthood, and his exploration of the world in search of the Dragon Balls, which have the power to make any wish come true. The Dragon Ball manga has sold 159 million copies in Japan. The manga was later adapted into two anime television series, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, produced by Toei Animation. Dragon Ball was released between February 1986 and April 1989. Additionally, 20 animated feature films, three television specials, and two anime sequel series, Dragon Ball GT (1996–1997) and Dragon Ball Super (2015–2018), were produced. From 2009 to 2015, a revised version of the Dragon Ball Z series was released under the title Dragon Ball Z Kai, a remake that more faithfully followed the manga's story by simply removing most of the material featured in the anime. Several companies have sprung up various types of merchandising based on the series, which has become a major media franchise that includes both animated and live-action movies, card collectible games, numerous action figures, various soundtrack collections, and numerous video games. Dragon Ball has become one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.
