Germany, officially known as the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland), is a country located in Central Europe. It is bordered by Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, France to the southwest, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands to the west. Germany is the most populous country in the European Union and has the largest economy in Europe. It is known for its rich cultural heritage, historical contributions to philosophy, science, and the arts, as well as its technological advancements. After World War II, Germany was divided into East Germany (German Democratic Republic) and West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany), with the Berlin Wall separating East and West Berlin. The wall fell in 1989, leading to the reunification of Germany in 1990. Today, Germany is a federal parliamentary republic with 16 states (Bundesländer) and a highly developed social market economy. It plays a significant role in international politics and is a member of major international organizations such as the European Union, NATO, the United Nations, and the G7. Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany.
