Gateway to Your Phone
Good day friends,
I recently realized how little I know about the vulnerability of my SIM card. How I recognize this attack and how to react I will try to summarize in this post...
What are the methods of attack?
SIM swapping attack. The most common form of attack. The attacker tricks my mobile operator into issuing him a new SIM card. The attacker must know my sensitive data. How is it possible? Information brokers? The dark web? Spyware? I was probably already being followed…
An attacker can also get my card physically (SIM clone attack) or use malware to clone it (SIM malware attack). Alternatively, I will respond(!) to an SMS or email from a fake operator (phishing attack on a SIM card). Somewhat rarer forms of attacks from the same target and equally disastrous consequences. Either way, the warning signs of an attack are the same…
How do I know I've been attacked?
It depends on the action of the attacker. Unsolicited calls, texts or emails. Loss of access to accounts or services that require phone number verification. Password reset requests, unexpected charges for services or goods I didn't order...
How to react?
Yes, I have a problem and it may be late. Or not? Of course, contact your operator first. Finally, all my financial institutions where I use phone numbers. I am not using a hacked mobile phone. I change passwords on all important accounts. And above all, I act quickly.
Are there the most at-risk groups?
From a historical perspective, it can be concluded that the targets are most often the owners or employees of technological giants, or world-famous personalities and their social networks. Traditionally, of course, an android user. I'm more calm? Barely.
Can I defend myself more effectively?
OK. I use an antivirus program, I have a strong login on my SIM card, I update my software regularly, I share minimal personal information on public profiles - let alone a portfolio, I change my email passwords regularly, I use an authenticator... Does this mean I'm safe? Unfortunately, no. Aside from the general principles of online protection I just mentioned, I haven't found any secret weapons to share…
And what about you?
