Michelle Lynn Monaghan, born on March 23, 1976, is an American actress known for her versatile roles in both film and television.
In the realm of cinema, Monaghan has showcased her talents in various genres. She starred in acclaimed films such as "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (2005), "Gone Baby Gone" (2007), "Made of Honor" (2008), "Eagle Eye" (2008), "Trucker" (2008), "Source Code" (2011), "Pixels" (2015), and "Patriots Day" (2016). Notably, she gained recognition for her portrayal of Julia Meade in the action-packed "Mission: Impossible" film series, appearing in "Mission: Impossible III" (2006), "Ghost Protocol" (2011), and "Fallout" (2018).
Transitioning to the small screen, Monaghan has also made significant contributions to television. She starred as Maggie Hart in the first season of HBO's anthology crime drama series "True Detective" (2014), a role that earned her a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. Monaghan also played Sarah Lane in the drama series "The Path" (2016–2018). Her television credits further include the role of Eva Geller in the Netflix thriller series "Messiah" (2020) and an appearance in the miniseries "Echoes" (2022).

Michelle Monaghan was born in Winthrop, Iowa, a small town with a population of around 750 at the time. She is the daughter of Sharon (Hammel) and Robert Monaghan, who worked as a factory worker. Michelle has two older brothers named Bob and John. Her ancestry is primarily Irish and German, and she was raised in the Catholic faith.
She completed her high school education at East Buchanan High School in 1994. Following her graduation, she moved to Chicago to pursue journalism at Columbia College Chicago while also starting her career in modeling. Monaghan modeled in various cities around the world, including Milan, Singapore, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, as well as in the United States.
Despite having just one semester left to complete her journalism degree in 1999, Monaghan decided to move to New York to pursue her passion for acting. While in New York, she continued to work as a model, appearing in numerous magazines and catalogs before transitioning into acting, where she made her debut.
Michelle Monaghan's early television appearances included supporting roles in episodes of "Young Americans" in 2000, where she played Caroline Busse, and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" in the episode "Consent," which aired on January 19, 2001. She made her big-screen debut in 2001 in the film "Perfume," portraying the character Henrietta. Following this, she appeared in a supporting role in the 2002 film "Unfaithful," starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane.
In 2002, Monaghan landed a significant role in the television series "Boston Public," playing the character Kimberly Woods. After guest-starring for a season, she returned to film, appearing in "It Runs in the Family" in 2003, "Winter Solstice" in 2004, and starring alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" in 2005. She also had a role in "Constantine" in 2005, although her scenes were largely deleted from the final film.
Continuing her film career, Monaghan co-starred with Ben Stiller in the 2007 remake of "The Heartbreak Kid" and appeared alongside Casey Affleck in "Gone Baby Gone." In 2008, she starred with Patrick Dempsey in "Made of Honor" and co-starred with Shia LaBeouf in "Eagle Eye." She also starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in "Source Code" and played the role of Diane Ford in "Trucker."
In 2014, Michelle Monaghan starred in the first season of the HBO anthology series "True Detective."
In April 2016, Monaghan joined the principal cast of Shawn Christensen's independent feature film "The Vanishing of Sidney Hall," which began filming later that month. Nine months later, on January 25, 2017, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
In May 2018, it was announced that Monaghan had been cast in the main role of CIA operative Eva Geller in the Netflix thriller "Messiah." The series premiered on Netflix on January 1, 2020, but was cancelled after one season.
In 2024, Monaghan is set to have a supporting role in the horror film "MaXXXine" and is also set to star in the upcoming third season of the Emmy award-winning show "The White Lotus." Filming for the third season is scheduled to take place in Thailand in February 2024.
