Polymer - Thinking in Modular
“Thinking in Modular” . This is the headline of blog that Polymer Labs published on February 27, 2023. Modular blockchains are very popular these days. With Celestia’s successful launch, it is becoming more popular. Polymer is focusing on modular interoperability and introducing new framework. The team plans to make blockchains like Ethereum and Solana more easily compatible with chains built using Cosmos’ IBC. Also, Polymer is the first IBC transport hub focused on expanding IBC to all chains.
What is the difference between monolithic chains and modular chains ?
The main difference is that, monolithic chains like Ethereum combines all three layers into one whereas modular chains break up the layers into parts. What is the difference with Celestia? The team is explaining it here fully, you can read the blog. They say;
“Celestia defines a modular blockchain as a blockchain that fully outsources at least one functional layer to an external chain. We define a modular interoperability protocol as one that fully outsources the transport layer.”
So the key differences is defining transport layer as interoperability protocols. They are building the first modular interoperability protocol that fully outsources the transport layer and partly outsources the state layer. You can see the diagram below.
Overall, Polymer's thinking in modular approach revolutionizes the way developers design and build blockchain solutions. It empowers developers to create highly adaptable and scalable systems that can evolve with the ever-changing needs of the blockchain industry.
