Martinelli’s winner helps Arsenal maintain winning start
Arsenal defeated Aston Villa 2-1 with a goal from Gabriel Martinelli to maintain their undefeated Premier League record.
At Emirates Stadium, Douglas Luiz's straight goal from a corner, his second such goal this season, cancelled his compatriot Gabriel Jesus' first-half goal.
Emiliano Martinez received criticism for both Jesus' goal and Martinelli's goal, which came three minutes after Villa's equalizer and despite a series of excellent saves.
Martinez flinched at Martinelli's shot while facing his former team, helping Arsenal start a top-flight season with five straight victories for just the fourth time in club history.
Within the first ten minutes, Martinez was on hand to stop Jesus before Tyrone Mings successfully blocked a Martin Odegaard shot.
In the 30th minute, Granit Xhaka's powerful cross deflected off Ezri Konsa and fell to Jesus, who pounced on the loose ball and gave Arsenal a well-deserved lead.
Aaron Ramsdale's requests for a foul went unheeded, but Villa came out with greater purpose in the second half and equalized in amazing fashion. Substitute Douglas Luiz scored directly from a corner with just his second touch.
