The King, the Beggar, and the Judge's Wisdom !
It occurred a long time ago. A king named Bakaus ruled in the African country of Algeria. There lived a wise judge in a city of his kingdom, whose justice was spread far and wide.
When news of his fairness reached the king's ears, he decided to test him.
He mounted the horse and headed towards the judge's city. When he reached the entrance of the city, he saw a handicapped beggar sitting there.
The beggar signaled the king to stop. The king stopped.
He said to the king, βHelp me. Drop me to the next square.β
The king made him sit on the horse. When they reached the next square and the king asked the beggar to get down from the horse, the beggar said, βThis is my horse. You get down from the horse.β
An argument started between the two. People gathered around him. Seeing the debate increasing, people suggested that they should go to the judge for a decision.
Both reached the court. There was a lot of crowd in the court. The judge was calling everyone one by one and listening to their arguments. First of all he called a writer and farmer. There was also a woman with him.
The author pointed towards the woman and said, βJudge sir, this woman is mine.β
The farmer said, βHe is lying, Judge. This is my woman.β
The judge heard their arguments. He asked the writer and the farmer to come the next day. Stopped the woman.
After that the butcher and the oilman appeared before him. The butcher's clothes were splattered with blood, while the oilman's clothes had oil stains everywhere. The butcher had a bag of money in his hand.
The butcher said, βJudge sir! This bag of money is mine.β
The farmer said, βNo, Judge! This bag is mine.β
After listening to the arguments of both, the judge said, βLeave this bag of money here. You both come tomorrow. I will decide tomorrow.β
At last it was the turn of the king and the beggar.
The king told the whole incident to the judge. Then the judge said, βLeave the horse here. Both of you come tomorrow.β
The next day everyone appeared in the court. First of all the judge called the writer and the farmer. Both came forward.
The judge gave his verdict, βThis woman is the wife of the writer. The farmer is a liar. He should be given fifty lashes.β
After that he called the butcher and the oilman and announced the verdict, βThis bag of money belongs to the butcher. The false oilman should be given fifty lashes.β
At last the king and the beggar were called. The judge took both of them and reached in front of the stable. Many horses were tied in the stable.
First the judge took the king to the stable and asked him to identify the horse. The king recognized the horse. After that he took the beggar to the stable. The beggar also recognized the horse.
Everyone came back to the court. While giving the verdict, the judge said to the king, βThat horse is yours.β
He ordered the beggar to be given fifty lashes.
The king was very impressed with the judge's decision. After the court proceedings were over, the king went to the judge and asked, βJudge sir! I want to know how you arrive at all the decisions?β
The judge said, βThis morning I asked the woman to fill ink in the pen from the dispenser. He did this work well. I understood that she was the writer's wife. I took out the coins from the money bag and put them in a vessel of water at night. In the morning I saw that oil was not floating on the surface of the water. I understood that the oilman was lying. That bag of money belongs to the butcher. The horse matter was a bit complicated.β
βThen how did you reach the decision?β The king asked.
The judge started saying, βThis morning when I took both of you to the stable and asked you to identify the horse, my aim was not to see which of you two could identify the horse, but to see which horse was better among the two of you.β Who does he recognize from? When you approached the horse, the horse started wagging its tail happily. But when the beggar went near the horse, he raised his hind leg. I understood that you are the owner of the horse.β
The king was very happy to see the wisdom of the judge. Introducing himself, he wanted to give the reward to the judge. But the judge politely refused and said, βThis is my duty and I perform my duty with full devotion.β
Lesson
One should always do one's work with full dedication.
