In a recent reflection on Venezuela's political landscape, I have been reading the heart-wrenching journey of Miguel, a retired Metrobús driver from Caracas.

Miguel, once a fervent believer in Hugo Chávez's populist promises, now grapples with economic hardship—a meager retirement income that shattered his dreams of travel and entrepreneurship, and a political climate that forced his daughter to emigrate. His story is a stark reminder of the human cost of political disillusionment.

Hugo Chávez, affectionately known as the 'lefty of Sabaneta,' once mesmerized Venezuela with his charismatic promises and the nation's oil-fueled wealth. However, despite the vast revenues, which economist Manuel Sutherland equates to ten Marshall Plans, Chávez's era fell short of addressing the root causes of inequality. His death in 2013 not only marked the end of his leadership but also the beginning of Venezuela's economic decline, a stark contrast to the prosperity he had promised.

Nicolás Maduro, Chávez's successor, has seen a steady decline in popularity, exacerbated by his increasing authoritarian tendencies. His regime, marred by economic crises and a notable pivot from electoral authoritarianism to outright authoritarian practices, has led to significant protests and a general sense of betrayal among the populace. The suspension of democratic processes in 2016 and the manipulated electoral events illustrate a government in crisis, clinging to power at the cost of democratic integrity.

This is a cautionary tale for Latin American countries with populist leaders. The descent from popular democracy to authoritarianism under Maduro raises alarms about the potential paths of similar regimes. As we witness these developments, it becomes crucial for the international community to remain vigilant and proactive in supporting democratic norms and preventing authoritarian overreach.
