After the first match ended 3-3 at the Bernabeu, the rematch ended 1-1 and penalty shootout decided the winner after 120 minutes. Real Madrid, who outscored their opponents 4-3 in the shootout, became Bayern Munich's opponent in the semifinals.
At the Etihad, Real Madrid took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with Rodrygo's goal and closed in on their own half throughout the match. The Spaniards managed only 8 shots in 120 minutes.
City used 18 corners and had 33 shots and tied the game in the 76th minute with Kevin de Bruyne's goal.
In the remaining minutes, neither team could break the deadlock for 90 minutes. In extra time, Real Madrid defended their goal and took the match to penalties.
