What is Web3?

Limitations of web3 over web2
Web3, also known as the decentralized web, has gained attention as a promising evolution of the internet compared to Web2, which represents the current state of the internet dominated by centralized platforms. However, it's important to recognize that Web3 is still in its early stages of development and faces certain limitations and challenges. Here are some of the limitations of Web3 compared to Web2.

  1. User Experience: Web3 applications often have a steeper learning curve and are less user-friendly compared to their Web2 counterparts. Interacting with blockchain networks, managing private keys, and understanding complex decentralized protocols can be daunting for non-technical users.
  2. Scalability: Blockchain networks, which form the basis of Web3, face significant scalability challenges. Popular blockchains like Ethereum have limited transaction processing capacity, resulting in slower transaction speeds and higher fees during periods of network congestion. This hampers the seamless user experience and limits the scalability of Web3 applications.
  3. Energy Consumption: Many Web3 applications rely on Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanisms, which require substantial computational power and energy consumption. This has raised concerns about the environmental impact of Web3, as the energy requirements for mining and securing blockchain networks are often significant.
  4. Governance and Regulation: Web3 applications operate in a decentralized manner, which can make governance and regulation more challenging. The absence of central authorities raises questions about accountability, dispute resolution, and compliance with legal frameworks. Striking a balance between decentralization and the need for regulatory oversight poses ongoing challenges.
  5. Interoperability: Interoperability between different blockchain networks and Web3 applications is a complex problem. The lack of standardized protocols and the fragmentation of the blockchain ecosystem make it difficult for different systems to seamlessly communicate and share data. This limits the potential synergies and efficiencies that could be achieved through interconnectivity.
  6. Adoption and Network Effects: Web2 platforms have already amassed significant user bases and network effects. Shifting users from established platforms to Web3 applications requires compelling incentives and improved user experiences. Achieving widespread adoption of Web3 technologies and overcoming the inertia of existing centralized platforms remains a challenge.
  7. Data Storage and Accessibility: While Web3 promotes the idea of data ownership and control, the decentralized storage solutions available today may have limitations in terms of scalability, cost, and accessibility. Storing and accessing large amounts of data on decentralized networks can be challenging and less efficient compared to centralized cloud storage solutions.


It's worth noting that the Web3 ecosystem is rapidly evolving, and many of these limitations are actively being addressed by developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Solutions such as layer-2 scaling solutions, alternative consensus mechanisms, improved user interfaces, and cross-chain interoperability protocols are being developed to overcome these challenges and improve the overall Web3 experience.
