ETH Community Celebrates Ethereum's 9th Birthday
Ethereum community leaders look back on Ethereum's 9-year development journey.
July 30, 2015 marked the first block recorded on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain, marking the birth of the world's second largest blockchain network to date.
Over the years, Ethereum has gone from its initial faltering steps to one of the strongest pillars of the cryptocurrency industry, pioneering many trends that have now become the face of this field, from fundraising, DeFi, NFT to GameFi, memecoin, layer-2, Real World Asset, etc.
At present, Ethereum is still the leading blockchain in many indicators, most notably the locked value (TVL) reaching nearly 59 billion USD, with 78.8 billion USD of stablecoins circulating on it. Ethereum is also home to over 1,100 protocols, with a 24-hour on-chain transaction volume of $1.68 billion.
The block explorer Etherscan also compiles some on-chain information about Ethereum after 9 years of operation, with 2.45 billion transactions, 20.4 million blocks, 1 million validators, 277 million wallet addresses created, 66.9 million deployed smart contracts, and 2 million data blobs.
Did you know? 🤔
Ethereum produced its genesis block 9 years ago today. Happy birthday Ethereum! 🥳

On the occasion of the 9th anniversary of Ethereum's genesis block on July 30, 2015, prominent leaders and members of the Ethereum community shared their thoughts on the past, present, and future of the project.
The most prominent figure in the group of Ethereum co-founders, Vitalik Buterin, shared a picture of the group of early ETH programmers waiting together for the genesis block. Vitalik Buterin was the main author of the Ethereum whitepaper launched in 2013, which led to the creation of the smart contract blockchain two years later. The young founder of ETH recently wrote a blog post comparing the changes in Ethereum's development strategy in the 2010s and the 2020s.

A developer in the picture, Lefteris Karapetsas, also provided information about the individuals in the photo, notably: Christian - the inventor of the Solidity programming language, Gavin Wood - another co-founder of ETH and later the founder of Polkadot, Vlad Gluchowski - the brother of the founder of Zksync, Vlad Zamfir - a leading researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, ...
Many people are asking about who is who in that picture from my phone back on Ethereum's launch day.
So here we go with what I remember. Starting from Vitalik and going clockwise.

Meanwhile, the Ethereum Stories account posted a video interview with the founders of top ETH projects, where they shared their stories about their journey with Ethereum, with the appearance of:
- Director of Ethereum Foundation Aya Miyaguchi;
- Founder and CEO of Uniswap Hayden Adams;
- Founder of Synthetix Kain Warwick;
- Founder of Consensys Joseph Lubin;
- Co-founder of social network Reddit Alexis Ohanian;

Bitwise, one of the Wall Street asset management firms that just launched an Ethereum spot ETF, also posted a post to celebrate the coin’s 9th birthday.
TRON founder Justin Sun also took the opportunity to reveal that his birthday coincides with Ethereum’s, but was caught by the crypto community using an AI-edited photo.
By the way, it turns out Ethereum and I share the same birthday! @VitalikButerin https://t.co/CqvNvcMHGk— H.E.
