Outside of his acting career, Michael Madsen is a father of five children, among them actor Christian Madsen.
Michael Madsen was born on September 25, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Elaine (née Melson), pursued a career as a filmmaker and author, while his father, Calvin Christian Madsen, served as a World War II Navy veteran and a firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department. Madsen's parents divorced in the 1960s, leading his mother to transition from the financial world to pursue her passion in the arts, a decision influenced by film critic Roger Ebert. He has two siblings: Cheryl Madsen, who is an entrepreneur, and Virginia Madsen, an Academy Award-nominated actress.
Madsen's ancestry includes Danish heritage from his paternal grandparents, while his mother's side is of Irish and Native American descent.
Michael Madsen's acting career took off when he joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, where he apprenticed under the guidance of John Malkovich and appeared in productions such as "Of Mice and Men."
His breakthrough film role came with a small part in the science fiction movie WarGames. However, it was his portrayal of the sadistic criminal "Mr. Blonde" in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs that garnered him widespread recognition. Madsen initially sought the role of "Mr. Pink," ultimately played by Steve Buscemi, as it had more scenes with Harvey Keitel. Despite this, his performance as "Mr. Blonde" became iconic.
Although Madsen declined the role of Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, which went to John Travolta, he continued to star in notable crime films like Donnie Brasco. Reflecting on his filmography, Madsen acknowledged taking on various roles, even small ones, to support his family: "Some of them I'm only in for 10 minutes, but they bought my name, and they bought my face to put on the DVD box with a gun."
He reprised his collaboration with Tarantino in Kill Bill: Volume 2, portraying the character Budd, the brother of Bill (played by David Carradine). Tarantino once discussed the possibility of uniting Madsen and Travolta in a film titled Double V Vega, but the project became unlikely due to the characters' deaths onscreen and the actors' ages.
Madsen's filmography includes a range of projects, from acclaimed performances in independent films like Strength and Honour, for which he won Best Actor awards at several festivals, to appearances in less well-received films like Uwe Boll's BloodRayne, which he openly criticized as "an abomination."
Additionally, Madsen showcased his versatility by playing himself in the mockumentary Being Michael Madsen and co-starring in the web series Coma on Crackle.
Michael Madsen's career continued with diverse roles across film, television, and even reality television.
In the eighth season of the hit TV series 24, Madsen portrayed Jim Ricker, an old friend of the protagonist Jack Bauer (played by Kiefer Sutherland), adding his signature presence to the show's ensemble cast.
Outside of television, Madsen showcased his comedic chops in the film Let the Game Begin, displaying his versatility as an actor. He also ventured into reality television, participating in Celebrity Big Brother and finishing in 4th place in the final.
In the film Death in the Desert, Madsen took on the role of Las Vegas casino mogul Ted Binion, delivering a compelling performance in this crime drama. Additionally, he made a memorable appearance in the Kill Bill-themed music video for the song "Black Widow" by Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora, further cementing his association with Quentin Tarantino's iconic film series.
Madsen's collaboration with Tarantino continued in The Hateful Eight, where he starred in the ensemble western film. Despite rumors linking him to the leaked script, it was later revealed that Madsen was not responsible for the leak, allowing the film to proceed as planned.
In addition to his film work, Madsen appeared on television in Real Detective, portraying a dramatized version of former Texas Ranger Phil Ryan, showcasing his range as an actor.
Furthermore, he starred in Vilan Trub's crime drama film The Dirty Kind, drawing inspiration from real-life events involving Anthony Weiner, demonstrating his ability to tackle complex and challenging roles across various genres.
