An airdrop is the distribution of cryptocurrency tokens or coins, usually free of charge, to various cryptocurrency wallet addresses. Airdrops can be implemented as a way to gain attention and new followers, resulting in a larger user base and wider coin payouts.

Description
Airdrops aim to leverage network effects by involving holders of certain blockchain-based currencies, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum in their currency or project.[1]

There are two ways to distribute tokens from Airdrop:

by randomly selecting recipients or publicizing the event on bulletin boards or bulletins associated with the airdrop. Typically, holders of Ethereum coins worth more than a certain threshold will receive various tokens without asking for them. Many websites advertise cryptocurrency Airdrops and a good place to learn about upcoming Airdrops is Social media.

Cryptocurrency users can earn free cryptocurrency by supporting projects that issue coins via Airdrop. Usually Airdrops have many requirements that must be met, such as joining a channel. Telegram, Repost tweets or invite new users to join the project. If participants need to contribute capital to the project, then it cannot be considered an Airdrop but rather an ICO.

Airdrops can be considered, A very effective and common marketing strategy among new cryptocurrency projects. The goal is usually to spread the word about a particular product, coin, or exchange in the cryptocurrency world. Additionally, new token holders are incentivized for the success of the project by owning a certain amount of their own coins.[2]

Airdrop was first used by the Auroracoin project on March 25, 2014.[3] As time went by, in 2017 this strategy became increasingly popular[4] in the cryptocurrency community looking to expand its project community. Due to the effectiveness of this strategy, many promotional activities today appear unsolicited/spammy or fraudulent. Due to this bad reputation, many social networks, especially Facebook, now refuse to allow ads promoting various electronic money such as cryptocurrencies.[5]

In the United States, this practice raises questions about tax liabilities and whether the amounts constitute income or capital gains.[6]
