Ariel Winter Workman began her entertainment career at a young age, landing her first job in a Cool Whip commercial advertisement at the age of four in 2002. She then started appearing in various television shows, including Listen Up, Freddie, Monk, Bones, and ER.
Winter voiced the character of Gretchen in the animated children's show Phineas and Ferb before landing the role of Alex Dunphy in the hit series Modern Family, which aired from 2009 to 2020. She also contributed her voice to the character Marina the Mermaid in Disney Junior's Jake and the Never Land Pirates. In 2012, Winter was cast as Sofia, the lead character in the Disney animated franchise Sofia the First, which premiered in January 2013 on Disney Junior.
In addition to her work in television animation, Winter has appeared in several feature films, including Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Speed Racer, Duress, and Opposite Day. She voiced characters in animated films such as Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Disney's Bambi II, and Blue Sky's Ice Age: The Meltdown. Winter was also part of the cast of the Halloween-themed TV film Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred. Her performance in the film The Chaperone earned her a nomination for "Best Actress in a Motion Picture" at the Young Artist Awards in 2012.
In 2012, Ariel Winter's sister, Shanelle Workman, filed to become her guardian, citing allegations of physical and emotional abuse by their mother. In 2014, the court granted guardianship to Workman and removed Winter from her mother's care permanently. Their mother later released a statement indicating that the family had moved past the conflict. Subsequently, in 2015, when Winter was 17, she declared her emancipation on Twitter.
In the same year, Winter underwent breast reduction surgery. She explained in a 2016 interview with ABC News Nightline that developing at a young age in the public eye, combined with severe back pain, had been emotionally and physically challenging. Winter described the surgery as a positive transformation, both physically and psychologically, stating that it made her feel more comfortable and confident.
Winter gained media attention at the 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards for wearing a gown that revealed her surgical scars. Despite some criticism, Winter embraced her scars and expressed pride in them, stating that they are a part of her and that she is not ashamed of them. She emphasized that her talent should be the focus, rather than her appearance.
Ariel Winter attended Campbell Hall School in Los Angeles, graduating in June 2016. She was accepted to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and initially planned to begin her studies there in the fall quarter of 2016. However, she later postponed her enrollment to fall 2017. Winter expressed her interest in pursuing law as a career alongside her acting endeavors, emphasizing the importance of having alternative options.
