What problem does Web3 solve and why

Regardless of the business wars between Web2 platforms, but when most of the creators' needs can be partially met on Web2, it is easy to be confused.

Imagine the following scenario:

  • The centralized platform can change the model at will to make the system more beneficial to the platform rather than the creator;
  • Remove the creator's work from the shelves or shut it down directly;
  • In order to cater to the algorithm preferences of the platform, creators drive content production with advertisements;
  • The fan data of creators on centralized platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, and Tiktok cannot be transferred across platforms;
  • The songs and videos in the playlist are taken off the shelf due to copyright or some reasons, and you will never get back the memories you want;

With the above problems as the starting point, the Web3 creator economy is most different from Web2 in that its value is focused on decentralization and data interoperability.

Decentralization:

  • peer-to-peer transaction
  • Content and data protection through decentralized storage
  • All processes and decisions are open and transparent
  • Mechanism changes are decided by community vote

Data exchange:

  • Cross-platform convenience brought by data interoperability and return of data ownership

From the perspective of profit and practical operation, there will be no Internet traffic dividend when entering Web3, and there will be no popularization of new technologies and equipment in the short term on the supply side (such as truly realizing exposure to virtual scenes), and entering Web3 requires a series of cumbersome operations. In fact, most creators don't need web3 to solve these problems that they don't care about . Therefore, if the creator economy wants to develop on Web3 in the short term, it depends on the ideological changes of creators and fans . The economic benefits brought by cryptocurrencies and NFT are catalysts for a change in thinking. This is a new asset class unique to Web3, which will generate new consumption models, new economies, new user experiences, and new identity roles.

It’s just that the current Ponzi economic model is not sustainable, but the creator economy and the consumer economy, as the two main components of the market, fit the cycle from a certain angle, and may be able to support a product market value of 500-100 billion US dollars.

Now and the future, from the attention economy to the productivity economy

The starting point of the Web3 creator economy is not traffic grabbing, abandoning the competition for users' attention, and starting from productivity.

In the Web3 dimension, creators are equal, and if the content is good, benefits will be generated. The income is no longer too concentrated on top creators, but as the content supply increases, there will be differentiation. After all, even if there is no algorithm recommendation, the curator/fan recommendation mechanism may still be adopted.

The creator economy may also give rise to the profession of full-time fans. This is what excites me the most about the Web3 creator economy: I will choose the creator I like, agree with and love with my own unique aesthetic, from supporting at the beginning to sharing his/her success and gaining benefits. This refers to the income of real money, not the speculative income brought by Ponzi. So from the perspective of creators, always remember that those who pay the bill are not just users and fans who like themselves, but also a more important third party. With the introduction of cryptocurrency and NFT, stakeholders are not only themselves, users and fans, but also the platform itself, brands, etc. These tools allow the creator economy of Web3 to form a new capital ownership relationship.

It’s just that the current Web3 creator economy is still in the original state of the previous economic model – creators earn income by selling NFT and NFT copyrights, while Web2’s revenue sources such as advertising sharing, live broadcast rewards, content marketing, and knowledge payment still need to be developed urgently.

The creator economy is a big concept, with various forms such as text, pictures, music, and video, each with its own growth logic. In fact, the most widely created fields of Web 2 are not music, film and television, games, but general knowledge, so is it best to start with the Web3 knowledge education platform? Regardless of the form, the same goal is to not pay too much attention to grabbing traffic directly from big platforms.
