Katheryn Winnick
Katheryn Winnick, born on December 17, 1977, is a Canadian actress recognized for her leading roles in prominent television series and films. She is best known for her portrayal of Lagertha in the critically acclaimed television series Vikings, which aired from 2013 to 2020. Additionally, Winnick starred in the television series Wu Assassins in 2019 and Big Sky from 2020 to 2023. She also had a recurring role in the television series Bones from 2010 to 2011.
Winnick's versatility extends to the big screen, where she has showcased her talent in various films. Some of her notable film credits include Amusement (2008), Choose (2010), A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012), The Art of the Steal (2013), Polar (2019), and The Marksman (2021). Throughout her career, Winnick has demonstrated her ability to captivate audiences with her compelling performances across both television and film mediums.
Katheryn Winnick was born in Etobicoke, Ontario, and comes from a Ukrainian background. Ukrainian was her first language, and she didn't begin speaking English until she was eight years old. At the age of seven, Winnick began training in martial arts, eventually earning her first black belt by the age of 13. Remarkably, she had established three Taekwondo schools by the time she turned 21. While pursuing her degree in kinesiology at York University in Toronto, Winnick taught Taekwondo and self-defense to actors.
Winnick's passion for acting dates back to her childhood, where she began performing at her local community center in Toronto. She further honed her skills by directing plays during her time at Richview Collegiate Institute, where she earned a scholarship for drama and directing. Subsequently, she pursued her acting studies at the William Esper Studio, where she is now an alumna.
Katheryn Winnick's entry into the film industry was unconventional; she initially began by teaching martial arts to actors on movie sets. This experience ignited her passion for acting, leading her to pursue a professional acting career. Her debut as a series regular was on the show Student Bodies.
Since then, Winnick has showcased her talent in a variety of films, including Stand Up Guys, Failure to Launch, Love & Other Drugs, and Killers. She has also made guest appearances on numerous television shows, with notable roles in House, The Glades, Bones, Law & Order, CSI, Criminal Minds, and Person of Interest. In Bones, she portrayed Hannah Burley, a war correspondent who becomes a love interest for the main character, Seeley Booth.
Winnick's film credits include Cold Souls, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, as well as A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III and The Art of the Steal in 2013. However, her most significant television role came in 2013 when she starred as Lagertha in the History Channel's Vikings, portraying the legendary figure from Viking history.
In July 2017, Winnick teased a new role on her Twitter account, which was later revealed to be a main character in the Nazi Zombies mode of the video game Call of Duty: WWII.
Subsequently, in July 2018, she was announced as a series regular in the Netflix series Wu Assassins, playing the character Christine "C.G." Gavin. In February 2020, Winnick was cast in the starring role of Jenny Hoyt in the ABC crime drama series Big Sky.
Katheryn Winnick proudly identifies as both an American and Canadian citizen. This dual citizenship reflects her connection to both countries.
In a notable humanitarian effort, in March 2022, Winnick, alongside her mother, established "The Winnick Foundation" to raise funds to support the needs of Ukraine. This initiative underscores her commitment to humanitarian causes and her concern for global issues.
However, in November 2022, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs took the controversial step of banning Winnick from entering Russia, along with 99 other Canadians, as part of a response to Western sanctions. This incident highlights the complexities of international relations and the intersection of politics with individual actions.
