Understanding the Role of Character
The character of any individual can be assessed through their tone, mannerisms, and discourse, indicating whether they possess good or bad character. It's often said that
Man is identified by his character.
Character is shaped by one's thoughts and habits. Those with good habits and virtuous thoughts are esteemed highly by society, while individuals with negative qualities and thoughts face humiliation and disgrace. To lead a good and dignified life in society, one must cultivate a standard of good character. Whether a person exhibits good or bad character is evident in their actions and speech. When a teacher imparts lessons on ethics and character to students, they often highlight the exemplary character of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This serves as a practical and exemplary model, as history attests to the noble character of the Prophet.
Exemplary Character of the Prophet
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) softened the hearts of disbelievers with his noble character and gentle demeanor, leading many to embrace Islam.
Recall the historic instance when the disbelievers persecuted the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and Gabriel (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) offered to destroy them. Yet, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) refused, displaying mercy and compassion.
May God guide them, for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is a mercy to the world. His morals and character exemplified honesty, sincerity, and truthfulness.
Hazrat Omar Farooq (RA) also demonstrated remarkable character. Upon encountering a drunken man in Madinah, he felt remorse and vowed to abstain from alcohol forever.
The Impact of Exemplary Character
Under the leadership of Hazrat Umar bin Khattab, fear vanished from his kingdom as he upheld justice and fairness. His outstanding character fostered a society where even non-Muslims felt safe and lived freely, often sharing meals together. Such virtues ensure individuals are remembered fondly in society and history.
Reflecting on the sacrifices and achievements of our religious ancestors reminds us of the importance of character. Our ability to pursue our goals today is indebted to the exemplary character of our elders.
However, contemporary experts lament that today's youth lack a holistic understanding of character. Unlike the past, where character could predict one's future success, modern generations often lack perseverance, self-confidence, and a sense of purpose needed to cultivate dignified character.
The Importance of Good Character
It's said that no individual can offer meaningful advice unless they themselves embody good deeds. Similarly, the moral fabric and character of a society can be gauged by the speech and conduct of its people.
