The legendary bands that existed the shortest
They changed musical history, conquered millions of fans and remained in the memories as some of the greatest that ever existed. And the amazing thing is that they did it in such a short time. You may not have realized, but some of the most famous and influential music bands have actually only been around for a few years. For one reason or another, their destiny is to shoot abruptly and then finish quickly - to prove that you can create in a very short period of time and still leave eternal things behind. Today we give several examples of such groups and recall how little time they managed to achieve everything. Their disintegration is due to conflicts and incompatible characters, or because of tragedy and death of one of their members. But what they left will probably never be surpassed.
Nirvana (1987-1994) Curtto Cobain and company were at the center of the grunge furore that shook the music world in the early 90s. But with all the cult around Nirvana, we should not forget that the band achieved so much in the modest 7 years of existence. Of these 7 years, Nirvana has actually entered the mainstream only in the last three, after releasing her hit album Nevermind. Cobain's suicide in 1994 was the end of Nirvana's existence, but the legend of the trio is still alive today, and their songs are an emblem of an entire musical generation.
The Doors (1965-1973) Jim Morrison was another legendary frontman who died at just 27 years old. Prior to that, during his seven years at The Doors, he became a symbol of the counterculture, and the band created timeless creativity and shaped the face of psychedelic rock. After Morrison's death, the other three members of The Doors tried to continue for another two years, but there was no way to recreate the same magic in the absence of the frontman. Therefore, the breakup of the group was logical and inevitable, although in 1978 The Doors released one last album based on Morrison's poems. Years later, the musicians gathered for separate concerts with different guest vocalists, but the period with Morrison was the only one that had real weight for the band's legacy.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience (1966-1970) A third example of a music legend from the tragic club "27", Jimi Hendrix passed away too early, and his unique trio The Jimi Hendrix Experience existed for only 4 years. The band did not officially break up during the guitarist's life, although he released his last album, Band of Gypsys, with other musicians instead of Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. The Jimi Hendrix Experience spawned three albums recorded in 1967 and 1968 alone, so the band's most active period was extremely short. But it marked the pinnacle of Hendrix's career and produced music that generations of guitarists learned from.
The Beatles (1960-1970) 10 years is not a short time for a band to exist, but it's not that long when we talk about perhaps the most influential band in music history. The first of the Beatles' 13 albums was released in 1963, so we are really talking about only seven years in which the Liverpool foursome conquered the world and changed the notion of popular music. Disagreements within the band led to a breakup and successful solo careers of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. But the mythical aura around the Beatles cannot disappear, and their music remains a textbook for every avid musician and music lover.
Sex Pistols (1975-1978) Here, of course, we are talking only about the initial period of the existence of the iconic punks, which lasted only two and a half years. During this time, they initiated the punk movement in the UK, released their cult single album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols and inspired countless musicians and bands in the following years. Internal conflicts quickly ruined the Sex Pistols, and frontman Johnny Rotten announced the breakup directly on stage in front of the audience. Several brief reunions followed in the 90s and early 2000s, and recently even the other three toured without Roton, using singer Frank Carter in his place. But still only the initial years feel like the period of real existence of the Sex Pistols.
Cream (1966-1968) Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker were together for only three years, but they recorded four albums and went down in history as the first supergroup. Each of the three is a virtuoso on an individual level, and their collaboration expectedly gives rise to both great music and great tension and competition between them. The conflicts between Bruce and Baker became intolerable, their performance at the concerts deteriorated and Cream simply could not exist. But they proved that the concept of a supergroup could be successful, even for a short period of time, and subsequently many great musicians followed suit.
