1. IF
IF is a family comedy film written and directed by John Krasinski, where the premise revolves around the idea that children's imaginary friends are real creatures who linger in limbo after the children have grown up. Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming play characters who can see these obsolete IFs, with Steve Carell providing the voice for a giant furry IF named Blue.
Krasinski drew inspiration from his daughters' games and his wife Emily Blunt, who encouraged him to explore lighter themes after his directorial debut, A Quiet Place. Blunt's perspective, coming from her role in Mary Poppins, influenced Krasinski to pursue a more uplifting project. IF will be available for general release from May 17th.
2. Robot Dreams
Pablo Berger's acclaimed Spanish-French animated film, based on Sara Varon's graphic novel, follows the endearing story of a dog named Dog living in 1980s New York. Dog's life takes a joyful turn when he befriends a mail-order robot named Robot, discovering the joys of companionship. However, their bond is tested when Robot becomes stranded on a beach, prompting Dog to navigate life without his beloved friend.
Robot Dreams is praised for its humor, creativity, and emotional depth, despite its lack of dialogue. Wendy Ide of The Observer hails it as one of the finest animations in recent years, noting its appeal to audiences of all ages due to its blend of cute characters, gentle wit, and relatable themes of loneliness and friendship. The film was released on May 9th in Germany and May 31st in the US.
3. The Garfield Movie
In the comedy film Zombieland, one of the standout moments occurs when Bill Murray, playing himself, humorously reflects on his career regrets, mentioning his involvement in the Garfield movies. However, the upcoming Garfield Movie aims to offer a fresh take on the beloved cartoon character. Directed by Mark Dindal, known for The Emperor's New Groove, the film promises action-packed entertainment. Chris Pratt voices Garfield, although his casting may seem predictable given his previous roles in animated films.
Samuel L Jackson voices Garfield's father, Vic, while Nicholas Hoult portrays Jon, Garfield's owner. Snoop Dogg lends his voice to a character named Snoop Catt. Pratt emphasized Garfield's mischievous and playful nature, expressing his immersion in the role.
The film is set for general release on May 24th.
4. Back to Black
Amy Winehouse, a renowned singer-songwriter of her era, tragically passed away in 2011 at the young age of 27, following a tumultuous battle with addiction and media scrutiny. Asif Kapadia's documentary, Amy, released in 2015, delved into her turbulent life story. Now, a biopic titled Back to Black, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and written by Matt Greenhalgh, known for their work on Nowhere Boy, a drama about John Lennon's early life, portrays Winehouse's journey. Marisa Abela takes on the role of Winehouse, with Jack O'Connell portraying her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, and Eddie Marsan as her father, Mitch Winehouse.
According to Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian, Taylor-Johnson's film is her most accomplished work yet, offering a gentle and empathetic portrayal. Marisa Abela's performance captures Winehouse's vulnerability and youth, contrasting with her tough exterior and mature voice. Back to Black is set to be released on May 17th in the US and Canada.
5. The Fall Guy
At this year's Oscars, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt presented a heartfelt tribute to Hollywood's stunt performers, coinciding with the release of their new film, The Fall Guy. Directed by David Leitch and inspired by the 1980s TV series, the action comedy stars Gosling as Colt Seavers, a stuntman enlisted by his ex (Blunt) to find a missing movie star (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Collider's Perri Nemiroff describes the film as a thrilling and charming action-packed adventure that celebrates the artistry of stunt performers.
While it combines elements of romance, comedy, and suspense, The Fall Guy ultimately pays homage to the unsung heroes behind movie magic. The film hit theaters on May 3rd for general release.
6. Unfrosted
In the past year, we've seen films exploring the origins of various iconic products like Air Jordan shoes, BlackBerry phones, Flamin' Hot Cheetos, and Beanie Baby toys. Now, we're getting a comedy film about the creation of Pop-Tarts. However, don't be alarmed by the seemingly absurd premise; it's meant to be humorous. Titled Unfrosted, the film is directed and co-written by Jerry Seinfeld, who also stars as a Kellogg's executive.
The story, although loosely inspired by true events, takes a parody approach. It follows Kellogg's response to a rival company's introduction of a dehydrated breakfast pastry in 1964. The cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, Peter Dinklage, and James Marsden, with Hugh Grant portraying a frustrated Shakespearean actor who voices Tony the Tiger in Frosted Flakes commercials. Seinfeld describes the film as a colorful, silly comedy that offers a unique and entertaining perspective on the breakfast pastry industry.
