The Paradox of Leisure: Activities for Fun and Profit

In the midst of the compulsory work-from-home period due to ongoing protests in Nigeria, I found myself engaged in an intriguing conversation with a friend over the phone. The discussion began with a seemingly simple question that quickly turned thought-provoking: What are some activities people do purely for leisure that others also do for a living or to earn money?

Leisure Meets Livelihood

My friend kicked off the conversation with a few examples that illustrated this duality. Swimming, for instance, is a popular leisure activity. Many enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool purely for relaxation or exercise. However, for professional swimmers, this same activity translates into a lucrative career, with opportunities to earn medals, sponsorships, and prize money in events like the Olympics.

Similarly, teaching can be both a hobby and a profession. Some people volunteer their time to teach out of a passion for helping others learn, while others pursue it as a career, receiving a salary for their work in educational institutions. The realm of digital content creation offers another example: people can make videos for fun, but with platforms like YouTube, they can also monetize their content and earn significant income through ads, sponsorships, and viewer donations.

The Challenge: Leisure Without Profit?

The conversation then took an interesting turn as my friend posed a challenging question: What is a leisure activity that people do purely for fun but cannot be monetized? This question stumped me initially. After pondering for a while, the only activity that came to mind was sleeping. Surely, sleeping is a necessary and enjoyable part of life that one cannot profit from, right?

Wrong. My friend promptly debunked this notion with two compelling examples. First, there’s the possibility of setting a Guinness World Record for the longest time spent sleeping, which could potentially come with monetary rewards. Second, my friend mentioned billionaires like Aliko Dangote, who continue to make money even while they sleep because their businesses operate around the clock. Though I argued that this second example doesn’t directly tie to the act of sleeping itself, it certainly added an interesting perspective to our discussion.

Expanding the Horizon

To enrich our discussion, let's explore more examples of leisure activities that blur the line between fun and profit.

1. Gaming:
Many people play video games for fun, but the rise of eSports has turned gaming into a professional pursuit. Professional gamers and streamers earn substantial income through tournaments, sponsorships, and streaming platforms like Twitch.

2. Cooking:
For some, cooking is a delightful hobby. Yet, many turn this passion into a career by becoming chefs, food bloggers, or even contestants on cooking shows, earning money from their culinary skills.

3. Photography:
While some people take photos as a hobby to capture moments, others sell their photos online, work as professional photographers, or become influencers on platforms like Instagram, monetizing their creative talent.

4. Writing:
Journaling or writing poetry can be a personal and fulfilling leisure activity. On the other hand, professional writers, bloggers, and authors make a living by publishing their work, securing book deals, and attracting readership online. Infact, the BulbApp Project clearly exemplifies this.

5. Gardening:
Many enjoy gardening as a relaxing pastime. However, some turn their green thumb into a profitable business by selling plants, flowers, or organic produce, or by offering landscaping services.

The Open Question

With so many activities capable of crossing the boundary from leisure to livelihood, the original question remains compelling:

Is there an activity done purely for fun that cannot be monetized? I put this question to you, the readers. What is that leisure activity that people usually do for fun but one cannot make money from?

I eagerly await your comments and insights, and I'm sure they will add a delightful twist to this ongoing conversation.

Feel free to share your thoughts and perhaps even stump us with an activity that truly defies monetization. This exploration promises to be both fun and enlightening.
