Katampe Race Hike: A Memorable Event Organized by the Nigerian Social Initiative
Today’s hike event, themed the "Katampe Race Hike," was a special and memorable experience organized by the Nigerian Social Initiative. This event, the first of its kind, aimed to bring together hikers from various groups to engage in a competitive and adventurous challenge while fostering camaraderie and the spirit of unity.
The concept of the hike was straightforward yet exhilarating: the first three participants to reach the top of the hill, following a specified trail, would be declared the winners. To ensure fairness and adherence to the designated route, hikers were required to collect a tag at a specific checkpoint along the trail. This tag served as proof that each participant had followed the correct path to the summit.
The hike, which lasted approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, was both physically demanding and mentally stimulating. However, the event was not without its challenges. Due to some organizational issues, several participants unknowingly veered off the trail at certain points. This led to a mix of emotions among the hikers, some felt frustrated, while others took it in stride as part of the adventure. Given that this was the inaugural event of its kind, it’s understandable that there were a few hiccups along the way. There is certainly room for improvement, and I believe future events will be even better organized.
Despite the minor setbacks, everyone eventually managed to retrace their steps and find their way to the finish line. It was a relief to see that, as hikers, we could rely on each other to navigate through the confusion and complete the race.
At the summit, participants were treated to light refreshments, including small chops, water, drinks, and ram barbecue. The atmosphere was vibrant, with a dance competition breaking out while everyone enjoyed their snacks and rehydrated after the strenuous climb.
The main event, and the one I was most excited about, was the treasure hunt segment. The reason why I was so intrested in the hunt was because i actually dreamt about it, and in the dream, I picked a treasure. 🤑 After waiting for about an hour, the hunt began with a few instructions regarding the boundaries and perimeter of the search area. The rule was simple: the treasures were hidden in plain sight, and when you found one, you would know it wasn’t something that belonged in the bush.
The search began, and I set out with enthusiasm. To my surprise, I was the second person to discover a treasure, an envelope with a cardboard paper inside. The moment I found it, I realised that dreams come true. It was my Eureka moment!
Just when I finished celebrating, another Hike National also picked a treasure. At this point, the joy was..... we are bring it home 🙂😉The treasure hunt continued for a few more minutes until all the treasures were found. We then returned to the main area to continue dancing and enjoying the refreshments. About an hour later, the winners were announced and awarded their prizes through cash transfers. Each treasure hunter, including myself, went home with cash prizes.
I was overjoyed, not just because I was fortunate enough to find a treasure, but because, for the first time, the government is turning its focus towards hiking in its entirety. It was heartening to see various hiking groups come together and participate as one, all thanks to the Nigerian Social Initiative.
The event concluded with a gift presentation ceremony, and hints were dropped about similar events planned for the future. As a member of Hike Nation, I want to extend a special thank you to the organizers of the event, the members of Hike Nation for their incredible support, and all the participants from other hiking groups. The spirit of camaraderie among hikers was evident today, and it was truly a sight to behold.
Stay ready because the next adventure is just around the corner.
