  1. Fußball-Club Bayern München eV , also known as Bayern München ( German pronunciation: [ʔɛf ˈt͡seː ˈbaɪ̯ɐn ˈmʏnçən] ), FC Bayern Minga (in Bavarian ), or FC Bayern , is a German professional football club based in the city of Munich , Bavaria , Germany. The club is renowned as the most successful club in German football history, having won a record 33 national titles and 20 national cups . [4] FC Bayern was founded in 1900 by eleven football players led by Franz John. [5] Although Bayern won its first national championship in 1932, [6] the club was not selected for the Bundesliga in early 1963. [7] The club had its greatest successful period in the mid-1970s, under the captaincy of Franz Beckenbauer , won the Champions Cup three times in a row (1974-1976). Overall, Bayern have reached eleven Champions Cup/Champions League finals , most recently winning their sixth title in 2020 as part of a continental treble . Bayern has also won one UEFA Cup , one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup , two UEFA Super Cups , two Intercontinental Cups and two FIFA Club World Cups , making it one of the most successful European clubs in the world. Since the formation of the Bundesliga, Bayern has been the dominant club in German football with 33 titles and has won 11 of the last 14 titles. They have traditional local rivalries with TSV 1860 München and 1. FC Nürnberg , as well as a contemporary rivalry with Borussia Dortmund . Since the start of the 2005–06 season, Bayern has played its home games at the Allianz Arena . Previously the team had played at Munich's Olympiastadion for 33 years. The team colors are red and white, and the team crest shows the white and blue flag of Bavaria. [8] In terms of revenue, Bayern München is the largest sports club in Germany and the fourth largest football club in the world, generating €587.8 million in 2017. [9] In the 2017–18 season, Bayern earned €657.4 million in revenue. million with an operating profit of €136.5 million, marking 26 consecutive years of financial profitability. [10] As of November 2018, Bayern had 291,000 official members and there were 4,433 officially registered fan clubs with over 390,000 members. [10] The club has other departments for chess , handball , basketball , gymnastics , bowling , table tennis , refereeing , and senior football with more than 1,100 active members. [11] As of the end of the 2019–20 season, FC Bayern is ranked first in UEFA's club coefficient rankings . [12] History [ edit | edit source ] Bayern Munich's first match was against Nuremberg in 1901 After a dispute between club management and players from MTV 1879 Munich at the bar “Gisela” in Schwabing , 11 players decided to separate themselves and create their own club under Franz John's management on February 27, 1900. The name taken for the new club was FC Bayern Munich . This was the beginning of a unique success story. [5] The victory in 1932 in Nurnberg in the final against Eintracht Frankfurt was the first of a total of 20 title wins. [6] FC Bayern München did not take part when the Bundesliga was formed. [7] However in 1965, the club was promoted and became number three in the following season and since then has become a permanent member in the Bundesliga, [13] winning 28 Bundesliga victory titles and placing the club in the main position of the Bundesliga. So far, FC Bayern München is the most successful club. The first hundred years of Bayern Munich, its history and success story begins and ends with the name Franz. Is it a coincidence that Franz John who founded FC Bayern and a century later with a different Franz, this time Franz Beckenbauer who led Bayern Munich became a respected club and ideally with a stack of titles behind him in the new century as its president. There are many things that differentiate the past and present. Franz John founded and built Bayern from zero and was quite happy with the results of Bayern's 7-1 victory in his first match against a team before, MTV 1879. But John also gave the club a "charismatic" uniqueness first. At first, people knew it as Bavaria, and then as Schwabinger Bayern, from the unique hats of his players. In his time, Franz Beckenbauer has helped Bayern Munich become what it is today: an international club with millions of fans, an institution that reaches far beyond German football. Never in his wildest dreams did Franz John imagine that his team would become champions of Germany, champions of the European Cup and even winners of the international club championship. In the years following the war, Bayern won several regional competitions before winning its first South German championship in 1926, a feat repeated two years later.[9][12] Its first national title came in 1932, when coach Richard "Little Dombi" Kohn led the team to the German championship by beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2–0 in the final.[9] Adolf Hitler's rise to power brought an abrupt end to Bavaria's development. Club president Kurt Landauer and the coach, both Jews, left the country. Many other people in the club also cleared. Bayern was derided as a "Jewish club" while local rivals TSV 1860 Munich received much support. Josef Sauter , appointed in 1943, was the only NSDAP member to serve as president. After a friendly match in Switzerland , several Bayern players greeted Landauer, who was in the audience, and the club continued to experience discrimination.[13] Bayern were also affected by the decision that football players had to become full amateurs again, which led to the move of talented young centre-forward Oskar Rohr to Switzerland. In subsequent years, Bayern was unable to maintain its role as a national title contender, instead achieving mid-table results in its regional leagues. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, Bayern became a member of the Oberliga Süd , the southern conference of Germany's first division, which was then divided into five sections. Bayern struggled, hiring and firing 13 coaches between 1945 and 1963. Landauer returned from exile in 1947 and was once again appointed club president, a tenure lasting until 1951. He remains the club's longest-serving president. Landauer has been considered the founder of Bayern as a professional club and his memory is upheld by the Schickeria Bayern ultras . In 1955, the club was relegated but returned to the Oberliga the following season and won the DFB-Pokal Cup for the first time, beating Fortuna Düsseldorf 1–0 in the final.[3][4] The club struggled financially however, nearly going bankrupt in the late 1950s. Manufacturers overthrow president Reitlinger, who was later convicted of financial irregularities, was ousted in the 1958 election by industrialist Roland Endler . He provides financial stability for the club. Under his reign, Bayern experienced its best years in the Oberliga.[19] Endler was no longer a candidate in 1962, when Wilhelm Neudecker , who had become wealthy in the postwar construction boom, replaced him. In 1963, the Oberligas in Germany were consolidated into one national league, the Bundesliga. Five teams from the Oberliga South were accepted. The key to qualifying for the Bundesliga is the accumulated record of the last twelve years, where Bayern was only the sixth ranked club. Additionally, local rivals TSV 1860 Munich , ranked seventh were the champions of the last Oberliga-Süd season and were given preference based on this achievement.[20][21] After initial protests from Bayern over alleged mistreatment remained fruitless, president Neudecker rose to the challenge and hired Zlatko Čajkovski , who in 1962 led 1. FC Köln to the national championship. Fielding a team with young talents such as Franz Beckenbauer , Gerd Müller , and Sepp Maier who were then collectively referred to as the axis, they achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in 1965.[18] Costume color [ edit ] edit source ] Wikimedia Commons has media related to FC Bayern München kits . Initially Bayern's colors were white and blue, but the club used white shirts with black shorts until 1905, when Bayern joined MSC. MSC decided that the players had to play in red shorts. [5] Bayern played in its proud colors of maroon and white for most of its early years, but blue was used as an option. In the 1968–69 season, the shirts were striped in blue and white, with the shorts and socks blue. Between 1969 and 1973, Bayern wore a striped home kit in red and white with red or white shorts and red socks. In the 1973–74 season, Bayern switched to a full white kit featuring a single vertical red and blue stripe on the shirt. From 1974, Bayern have mostly worn a full red home kit, with white trim. Bayern again wore a red and blue striped color scheme between 1995 and 1997. In 1997, blue became the dominant color for the first time when Adidas released a full navy blue home kit with a red chest stripe. In 1999, Bayern returned to the dominant color of red, featuring blue sleeves, and in 2000 the club released the traditional full red kit with white stripes worn for Champions League matches. [8] Bayern also wore a Rotwein colored home kit in Bundesliga matches between 2001 and 2003, and during the 2006–07 Champions League , based on the first choice colors before the late 1960s. [14] The club's away kit has come in a variety of colors over the years, including white, black, blue, and gold-green. Bayern also features a different international kit. During the 2013–14 season, Bayern has used a home kit in full red with a diamond watermark pattern of the Bavarian flag, a white and black Oktoberfest away kit inspired by Lederhosen , and an international kit in full dark blue. [15] In the 1980s and 1990s, Bayern used a special away kit when playing at 1. FC Kaiserslautern , representing Brazil's blue and yellow colors , a superstition formed from the fact that the club struggled to win. [16] Organization and Finance [ edit | edit source ] Previous President of Bayern from 1994 to 2009 and legendary player Franz Beckenbauer The professional football team in Bayern is run by FC Bayern München AG. AG stands for Aktiengesellschaft , and Bayern is run like a joint stock company that is not listed on a public stock exchange, but is privately owned. 75% of the shares of FC Bayern München AG are owned by the club, FC Bayern München e. V. (e. V. is an abbreviation for Eingetragener Verein , which translates to "Registered Club") while 8.33% of the shares are held respectively by sports equipment manufacturer Adidas , car company Audi , and financial services group Allianz , a total of 25% . [17] Adidas held shares in 2002 worth €77 million. The money is intended to help finance the Allianz Arena . [18] In 2009 Audi paid €90 million for its shareholding. The capital was used to repay the loan for the construction of the Allianz Arena . [19] In early 2014, Allianz became the third shareholder to acquire shares worth €110 million. With this transaction, Bayern paid the remaining debt to the Allianz Arena 16 years earlier than scheduled. [20] Other sports departments are run by the club. [11] Bayern's main advertising partner and jersey rights holder is Deutsche Telekom . Deutsche Telekom has been a partner since the start of the 2002–03 season. Deutsche Telekom extended the partnership contract in August 2015 until the end of the 2022–23 season. [21] The club's main kit supplier is Adidas . Adidas has been a supplier since 1974. Adidas extended the partnership contract on 29 April 2015 until the end of the 2029–30 season. [22] Premium partners include Audi , Allianz , HypoVereinsbank, GoodYear , Qatar Airways , Siemens , Paulaner Berwery, SAP , DHL , Hamad International Airport , and Tipico. Gold partners include Coca-Cola , MAN , and Procter & Gamble . Classic partners include Apple Music, Bayern 3, Beats Electronics, EA Sports , Gigaset, Hugo Boss , Courtyard by Mariott, Veuve Clicquot and Adelholzener. [23] In previous years jersey rights were owned by Adidas [24] (1974–1978), Magirus Deutz and Iveco [25] (trucks, 1978–1984), Commodore [26] (computers, 1984–1989), and Opel [27] (cars, 1989–2002). Bayern is largely led by players from former clubs. Since 2016, Uli Hoeneß has served as club president, replacing Karl Hopfner who held the position since 2014. [28] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is chairman of the executive board of FC Bayern München AG. [29] The nine-member supervisory board includes Uli Hoeneß , Herbert Hainer (former CEO of Adidas ), Dr. Herbert Diess (chairman of Volkswagen ), Dr. Werner Zedelius (senior advisor at Allianz SE ), Dr. Michael Diederich (spokesman for UniCredit Bank AG), Timotheus Höttges (CEO Deutsche Telekom ), Prof. Dr. Dieter Mayer, Dr. Edmund Stoiber, and Dr. Theodor Weimer (CEO of Deutsche Borse ). [30] In the 2017–18 season financial report, FC Bayern recorded revenues of €657.4 million and operating profit of €136.5 million. After tax, the profit of €29.5 million means that this is FC Bayern's 26th consecutive year with a financial profit. [10] Social and charitable involvement [ edit ] edit source ] Bayern has been involved in charity work for a long time, helping other football clubs in financial turmoil as well as ordinary people in suffering. After the tsunami in 2004 "FC Bayern - Hilfe eV" was founded, a foundation that focuses on the club's social activities. [31] At its inception, the foundation was funded with €600,000, donated by officials and players from the club. [32] The money was used, among other things, to build a school in Marathenkerny, Sri Lanka and to rebuild the Trincomalee region , Sri Lanka. [32] In April 2007, the foundation's focus shifted to local communities in greater need. [31] This club has also repeatedly provided assistance to other clubs experiencing financial crises. Bayern provided support to local rivals 1860 München with friendlies, transfers at favorable rates and direct money transfers. [33] Also when St Pauli was threatened with losing its license for professional football due to financial problems, Bayern met the club for a friendly match, giving all match revenue to St Pauli. [34] When Mark van Bommel 's first club Fortuna Sittard was in financial difficulties, Bayern attended a charity match for the Dutch club. [35] Another famous example is the transfer of Alexander Zickler in 1993 from Dynamo Dresden . When Bayern recruited the player for 2.3 million DM , this price became a subsidy for Dresdeners who were threatened with a financial crisis. [36] In 2003, Bayern provided a €2 million unsecured loan to financial crisis-threatened Borussia Dortmund which has since been repaid. [37] [38] On 14 July 2013, Bayern played a charity match against third division club Hansa Rostock which was also threatened by a financial crisis. The match raised a profit of €1 million to secure Hansa's license which was under threat of being revoked. [39] On 30 August 2017, Bayern held a charity match against the financially troubled Kickers Offenbach . All in-match earnings go to Kickers Offenbach. Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "Kickers Offenbach is a club rich in tradition, they have always been an important club in Germany, so we will be happy to help them with a charity match." [40] Stadium [ edit | edit source ] Main article: Allianz Arena The Allianz Arena is a football stadium located in the Fröttmaning district in the north of the city of Munich . Opened on 30 May 2005 with a friendly match between TSV 1860 München and 1. FC Nürnberg , the stadium was the venue for the opening match of the 2006 World Cup . Once completed, this stadium replaced the Munich Olympic Stadium as the home stadium for TSV 1860 München and Bayern München. This super modern stadium was designed by Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron and has a seating capacity of 66,000 for international matches. the outer layer is composed of 1,056 rhombus-shaped panels, each of which can be illuminated in a different color (red, blue or white), so that it looks like a moving pattern. [41] Initially this stadium was a joint venture between two football teams from the city of Munich . But in 2010, Bayern München bought the full rights to the Allianz Arena, after TSV 1860 München experienced financial problems and was no longer able to cover the construction debt. In May 2012, Bayern opened a museum about its history, FC Bayern Erlebniswelt, inside the Allianz Arena. [42] Training facilities [ edit ] edit source ] Entrance to Bayern Munich Headquarters FC Bayern München's headquarters and training facility is called Säbener Straße and is located in the Untergiesing-Harlaching district of Munich. There are five grass fields, two of which have an underground heating system, two artificial grass fields, one beach volleyball court and a multifunctional sports hall. [43] The players' quarter was opened in 1990 and rebuilt after the 2007–08 season at the suggestion of the new coach at the time, Jürgen Klinsmann , who drew inspiration from various major sports clubs. The quarter is now called the performance center and includes fitness and weight training areas, massage units, locker rooms, trainers' offices and meeting rooms with screening facilities for video analysis. A cafe, library, e-Learning room , and family room are also included. Until August 2017, the Youth House was located at the head office, housing up to 14 young talents aged 15–18 from outside Munich. Former Youth House residents include Owen Hargreaves , Michael Rensing , Bastian Schweinsteiger , David Alaba , Holger Badstuber, and Emre Can . In 2006, Bayern purchased land near the Allianz Arena with the aim of building a new youth academy. In 2015, the project with an estimated budget of €70 million was started, after overcoming internal conflicts. The main reasons for the project were that the existing facilities were too small and the club, although very successful at senior level, was less competitive with other German and European clubs at youth level. [44] On 21 August 2017, the FC Bayern Campus opened. The construction of the FC Bayern Campus used a budget of €70 million. The facility is located on Ingolstädter Straße, north of Munich. This sports complex covers an area of 30 hectares and has 8 football fields for youth teams from U-9 to U-19 as well as senior and youth level women's teams. This sports complex also has a stadium with a capacity of 2,500 spectators where the U-17 and U-19 teams compete. Allianz FC Bayern Akademie is located within the FC Bayern Campus and has 35 apartments for young talents who do not live in the Greater Munich area. The academy building also has offices for coaches and youth team staff. Three consecutive European Cup trophies were won by FC Bayern Munich from 1974 to 1976. The one on the right is the original trophy, awarded to Bayern permanently. The ones on the left and center are slightly smaller replicas.
